So, now that i am meeting a few riders locally, I have been going out to more ride outs. (Loving it)

Just had a couple of questions;

1. What is the correct road position for following?
2. Is there a particular known gesture for letting other riders know if there are police.
3. Any other advice?

Thank you. Thumbs Up

You should really have a chat with the people you are riding with about this, everyone's different.

I prefer to follow in a staggered position, if the rider in front is left of centre I will be to the right so that I keep out of his blind spot and not too close, not too far back either or cheeky/bullish car drivers want to be in the gap.

Tapping the top of your helmet is a common 'Police ahead' signal, gesturing Slow down with the palm of the hand down is more specific to mobile speed traps but both work. Car driver's sometimes flash their headlights too.

That's just what I do. Thumbs Up

1. Staggered formation

https://www.aucklandhog.org.nz/images/gap.gif

2. Tap on the top of your helmet with one hand

https://twowheelstwofeet.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/122-1301-05-omotorcycle-hand-signalshead-tap.jpg

3. Be cautious of the way other riders ride. Ensure you are familiar with any ride out rules. Don't brake late. Have fun.

Edit: Typo Thumbs Up

1. Some do staggered, front person goes in ditch, second middle of road, third in ditch etc
It shrinks the length of the convoy and allows a bit better visibility and somewhere to put your bike if the guys up front stop a bit sudden.
But the UK roads are so crap this often isn't great as you can't really ride in the gutter.

2. Some round here use the palm face down bird flap, as in the Highway code for slowing down to a stop. Indicating to you to slow down. Some flash. Some tap the tops of their helmets, which is better than the hand wave because you don't have to come off throttle to do it.

3. Don't ram your buddies up the arse. Very bad form. Happens more often than you'd think.
Be predictable, smooth and consistent.

EDIT:
I really should type faster, there were no replies before.
So yeah, what they said. Smile

Staggered is good for when you're on a big, slow parade style ride and need to stay fairly compact.

If it's half a dozen of you, ride your own ride. If you're close enough to the rider in front that you feel you have to not use the correct line for the road, back off.

I tend to do that a lot.

Mostly though it was just mates with 125's so I was usually fastest, the NSR 125 my mate had was quicker than my TTR 250 but the rider was not, even on knobblies, but he struggled keeping up with a mate with a TZR50, 80, with many go faster stuff bolted on if corners were about. My mate could ride that little Yam at 70 everywhere, I was very impressed. Thumbs Up

We tend to ride staggered or spread out so far you can hardly see them in the mirror. Laughing

When I'm green laning with mates usually that's staggered as well but only half of them have working lights fitted, no one has any mirrors and you find yourself tearing down tiny single track lanes with some turn off somewhere that no one is quite sure of it's precise location so when it's spotted it's a last minute turn in. THAT keeps you on your toes.

I agree can't see the point of riding staggered. Rather sit back 50-100m and like you said ride my own ride.

Set off in tight formation and follow every instruction singled from the leader, at the first left hand bend turn on your indicator and disappear by yourself to have a great days ride whilst the Son's Of Anarchy wannabes live their version of the American dream like a bunch of sheep.

Agreed. My pal stays next to Mcdonalds and we often see the local Byker Grove on their BMW GS's taking an adventure to the local mcdonalds. Laughing

Then again I guess if that's what they enjoy then fair play to them.

Ride your own pace - don't be dragged along if you're not happy at that speed.

Haha, don't take it too seriously and BCF memebers are the exception. Plus nothing wrong with the GS, but it seems like McD's is an event for that group as there's a regular collection of them.

It's probably just a local IAM group or something :p.

another tip for big slow rides is make sure you know what the drop off system is

went on rides where two people in hi viz stopped and blocked traffic so everyone else got through Shocked Shocked

rather then person behind the lead bike stopping on a junction showing everyone else which way everyone went , waiting for most bikes and then falling in just in front of last bike .
next junction the next behind stops and so on

you have a strange visor

If you are riding behind someone and see them do it, you will notice the difference

Slider for Caberg sun visors is generally on the top of the helmet.

Don't ride in groups with loonies.
Don't follow them on overtakes through ever closing gaps.
Don't flick the clutch from every set of lights, or do stuff to intimidate other road users at every opportunity.

I agree with riding alone or with 1-2mates tops.
Big groups suck even if the rider's are decent and safe.

I rode a couple of times with the first group, it nearly put me off going out on bikes for a while.

I completely agree. One to two mates is fine, any more it turns into a willy waving contest.
