Probably not a big deal to some but planning to do the cbt on only a 50cc and in dire need to pass to commute to work, I will be buying a 125cc though at the end of it, does the instructor advise to put you on a geared bike or will I just take my pick of the scooters which would please me haha am not daft like just nervous I guess

if you are going to ride a 125cc scooter do it on the 50cc but if you are thinking of a 125cc geared bike then learn on the bike

you pay the same so may as well get the learning you need out of it

One of my lads recently did his CBT on a geared bike
and his fellow pupil was on a scoot so pretty sure the choice of geared or non geared is up to you.

The thing is you'll only be allowed to ride a twist and go after
(which is what you seem to want)
and if you want to move to a geared bike you'll have to do it again.

If you do the CBT on a geared bike you can ride either
same as getting a car license BTW

"and in dire need to pass to commute to work"
AFAIK there's not much 'pass' in CBT, you'll only 'fail' if the instructor deems you unsafe at present and in need of further basic training.

You can do your CBT on a 50cc and then ride a 125cc assuming you're over 16.

You can also do your CBT on a twist and go 50cc and then ride a geared 125cc.

If you do or don't want to ride a geared bike after you've done your CBT then that's up to you but it may be worth learning to ride a geared bike so that if and when the time comes around you already have the experience under your belt, why restrict yourself?

Gears honestly aren't all that scary, I hadn't even touched a motorbike in person before doing my CBT in fact the only thing I had done was read some of the highway code, the instructors are there to teach you to a basic level to ensure you're safe to learn on your own for a couple of years.

You'll start of on a empty piece of land (or something similar) with the instructor talking over the controls of the bike, what they do etc etc.

Let the clutch out gently and you'll feel the bike want to cut out, apply some throttle and you're away, roll off the throttle.. apply the front and rear brake.. pull the clutch in.. and you've come to a stop.

I won't complicate things by filling your head with how to shift gears but you'll get the jist in the morning session of the CBT.

Honesty, for now it will seem like the most important day and really hard with a lot to take in and learn all in one day, it's the begging and the fun and easy part that can be completed in one day for next to nothing (in comparison to a full license).

Stop thinking and enjoy it Thumbs Up

Not the case. The cert they give you has boxes to tick to show what machine was used but it doesn't limit you to that machine. Pass on a 50cc ped and you could go home and jump right on a geared 125.

I did CBT on a 50cc auto and did not have any trouble making the modest jump to 125cc a week later.

If this is genuinely all you are interested in riding or you are not so confident, I'd say stick with the auto for your CBT. If you later decide to switch to geared, I think you may be able to achieve a reasonable level of competence within a couple of hours on one. That may be about £50-60 or free if you have a friend willing to let you have a go, as there is no auto restriction on a CBT certificate.

If you think there is a chance you will want to try geared later, my vote is do CBT on one. My thinking was similar I suspect. Just get it for the commute. Might even be fun. Keep it simple and minimise risk. Now I have experienced the gateway drug, I want to learn to ride a "proper" bike and get something more fun, even if it sacrifices a little practicality in urban traffic. Hopefully the ability to go further and keep up better when outside of rush hour traffic will balance this out. I've had a taster of riding a geared bike and can't wait to do more. So much so that I am really having to talk myself out of doing something financially unwise and getting a YBR125 to tide me over.

Pretty good chance that once you get a taste, you will want more.

Do it on the geared. No reason not to. At least you'll know how.

A good reason not to is that it's a hell of a lot easier on a twist & go.

Hmm
I didn't know that, I assumed it was as cars where you'd be restricted to an auto unless/until you proved competancy using gears
Doesn't seem right somehow but whatever.

I did my CBT just shy of a year ago. I knew what bike (trike - Piaggio MP3) that I wanted before I took the training. They had a geared 125cc and a 50cc Sym. I was on the latter. The instructor said that once the training was done, we'd stick around and learn gears, but as I was buying a twist n' go I decided against it (but the option was open to come back for free).

My CBT is fine for geared too. Problem is that I've not ridden one for about 15 years, so out of self-confidence have chosen not to.

That'll all change in a month or so though when I take my big-boy test.
