Hi folks.

Newbie here who is needing a bit of help. A bit of my background first. I had a 125cc 20+ years ago and had a big accident and it has taken me this long to want to get another bike. I have passed my CBT and theory and I am sitting my Mod 1 & 2 this month.

Anyway I just bought a new helmet, HJC IS-17, and I wore it for an hour or so to break it in before my lessons and test. The problem is I now have a horrible, large and flaky rash all over my forehead. I can only assume it is from the helmet as I have done nothing else new.

What I am looking for is a liner/skull cap that I can wear underneath my helmet. Any recommendations? It needs to be thin as the helmet is tight with it being brand new.

Thanks in advance

You can get something from those outdoor/sports/adventure/ski type stores, but it might be worth seeing if you can remove the liner and give it a wash.

First time I did mine, I was surprised at how much dye came out of it!

I have a neck warmer that is really long. You can cover your head and open it down over your chin. Really thin too. But it might be a little warm over summer.

Does it fit right? I had similar with my is-16 because it was too tight across the forehead.

Thanks guys. I will try a couple of skull caps and see how I get on. However I don't think there is much room for one. I have a medium and it seems a really good fit given it is a new helmet, so hopefully the right size. The shop thought so anyway.

Remove helmet liner (read the little book that came with your lid if you can't work out how), put in pillow case and wash on your slowest spin cycle. Do not tumble dry. Do not put on hot radiator.

It could be something from the manufacturing process you are allergic to, it could be the helmet was tried on by someone else and they were wearing something you are allergic to.

I had issues with an IS17 fitting on a cold day but not when I went back on a hot day. Head shape, blood flow and all that. Put lid on, grab the back and push forward as hard as you can. Now try to insert your thumb between your forehead and the liner. There should be some space, enough to get thumbnail deep if you have thereabouts average size thumbs. If it's tight as a tight thing the lid is too small.

If your lid is too tight then an extra liner may make problems worse.

I occaisonally have skin reactions to hats and uniforms. Never had problems with hjc or shark lids. HJC silvercool liners have mighty antimicrobial properties which might be an issue.

I have an IS-17 and whilst I quite like the general fit and finish it is the most noisy crash helmet I have ever worn. The wind noise is just horrible and it even makes odd noises when you turn your head.

Get earplugs or get tinitus.

Really thin fabric so should not interfere with fit, wear like a balaclava.

I buy them 5 at a time as neck and chin draught-proofers, I only wash them a few times each, after that they start to bobble.

Cheap as chips and make good visor wipes to stash in your pocket when you are done wearing them as intended.
