Inb4 CSB

But I had a similar one yesterday. Driving though. Up to a blind junction which is a give way, but in the interests of not going to hospital or jail, I always stop. Some cockbrained moron steps out in front of me, headphones on, swagger in full effect. Looks left after I am stopped, visibly stifles a jump and walks on, all cocky like.

Felt very compelled to want to pay a higher excess after the enevitable license loss period in that short few seconds...

So the lead car, presumably waiting right at the entry to the roundabout (?), let the cyclist cross, and you were approaching the roundabout "at an alarming rate of knots".

Have I got this right?

a) car driver silly to let cyclist cross without proper observation.
b) motorcyclist approaching roundabout too fast.

had a stupid driver moment today

first of all car stopped at every island we came to to see if it could go or not

secondly the same car got to another island which is clearly marked left lane straight on right hand turn right for m5 south (I WAS IN THIS LANE AS TAKING THAT TURNING)

car in left lane comes right round and is now in the lane I need to get into to come off the island

I ended up abandoning the maneuver and went round again

Upon my last visit to the training school one of the things that struck true was the whole "as much of a good intention that people have flashing their lights and waving you out, take it with a pinch of salt and make your own observations".

On the regular commute you get used to the hotspots where people like to tempt your fate.

People stopping to leave a gap for dedicated turn lanes from the main road into a side road is a common one I encounter, often cars in the outside or lane closest stop but cars on the inside don't, proceed with caution.

Cyclists generally amaze me, I had one who decided to voice his opinion at me because I pulled out of a side ride to join a roundabout and had apparently came close to him, despite being seconds latter when he caught up his lack of hi-vis gear or any safety simply gave him the stare of death and rode on.

I'm intrigued as to why you thought he should be wearing hi-vis? Despite what some people seem to think, it isn't a legal requirement.

so was the cyclist crossing the road like a pedestrian or was he just going round the roundabout?

"his lack of hi-vis gear or any safety".

Either of the above, if he isn't going to help himself to be noticed then any opinion he chose to voice at me was going to be ignored. Wearing any safety gear other than a helmet on a motorbike isn't required by law.. but I do so for my benefit.

Cycling towards a major roundabout, from a 30 into a 40 zone without even so much as a basic helmet, each to their own.

Helmets are not a legal requirement either - and, despite what people think, it isn't even clear that they make any difference (they aren't motorbike helmets). In Australia, for example, where a mandatory helmet law was rigorously enforced, there was NO statistically significant difference in serious head injuries (in fact they went up slightly). Real world experience trumps beliefs.

So, what you are saying, is that if somebody using the road entirely legally doesn't comply with what you think they should be wearing then you will endanger their lives and feel righteous about it?

It sounds like you had poor obs and blamed him.

(Of course, it is possible he was riding like a twat and overly sensitive about a perfectly safe manoeuvre in front of him - but he may also have hit the brakes to slow down because he saw you pulling out in front of him).

Nearly binned it last week and it was all my own fault - approaching a village I saw a bike parked up on the left hand side. Didn't know if the bloke needed any help so I took a long look. Didn't notice that the traffic had stopped in front of me either. If anybody saw an orange Speed Triple perform a stoppie coming into Mytholmroyd a few days ago - I was that muppet...

No, and that's a tad overdramatic (applied to my personal mentioned encounter).

What i'm saying is that the cyclist did nothing before setting of on his trip to avoid zed situation and therefore when it arose he felt the need to demonstrate his disapproval.

I had time to sit in the que and move forward a little before he managed to work his way towards the roundabout and stop to voice his opinion, if I had really failed to spot him then I would of known about it a lot sooner, grumpy old git IMO, hence the stare of death.

Fair enough - but if you'd seen him already then it proves that hi-viz wasn't needed Smile

You're certain the cyclist was crossing the road and not going round the roundabout and thus you should have given way?

It's not the car driver's responsibility to check for traffic, all he's done is say to the cyclist "I'm waiting for you to cross"

It's the cyclist's job to check it's safe to do so - admittedly he's failed in this respect

It's your job to question why traffic hasn't moved onto what appears to be an empty roundabout and act accordingly.

I'm pretty sure you get told all the way through learning to drive that you should never wave anybody across the road, because of this exact situation.

true, it's in the modern day highway code. I think that a lot of people that passed their test over 20 years ago know this though. it's a similar story with roads with more than one lane. A lot of people that are 10+ years older than me, don't realize that you are meant to keep left unless you are overtaking.

So how do you know the car driver waved the cyclist across?
If you could not see the cyclist due to the van. How did you see the car driver make any signals.
Because if you could see the car driver, then you sure as hell could see the cyclist that HAD TO BE IN FRONT OF HIM.... And could not have been hidden behind the van Rolling Eyes
