I did this at Motherwell Community Fire Station this Saturday, the course being run on a voluntary basis by fire service bikers.
Worth doing? Yes, I reckon so.
It's in 3 parts:
1) Accident scene management. This covered a lot of breadth if being unable to go into much depth. Briefly: don't get deaded yourself, stop the traffic, assess the casualties (silent over screaming), get the emergency services on the way, delegate tasks.
One point that they made strongly was: if in doubt, ask for the Fire Brigade. Unlike the ambulance, they don't prioritise calls, they just turn up ASAP. They'll get there quicker, will often come from 2 directions so that they find you, and they're equipped to handle most things including keeping people alive until the ambulance turns up. They'd rather be called out when not needed than the other way around.
2) First aid. When to take a lid off and how to do it, and this was really useful. There are some practical considerations that you won't be ready for unless you've tried it, like how the head drops the instant the lid comes off, so if you've got someone supporting it they need to be ready for that.
Then CPR practise, and again having a go with a dummy chest brings it home how hard and fast you need to thrust Matron. Also, tourniquets are apparently back in vogue again to stop bleeding. Put 'em on and leave them.
3) The science of being seen. Poor show. It's the SMIDSY weave, looming, camouflage, all the stuff that we've been over loads of times here. If you're interested you'll already know it, and if you're not then you probably won't care. This felt tacked on and hectoring, I could have done without it.
However, the first 2 parts of the course were excellent. Everything had to be necessarily brief, but it was pragmatic, useful with loads of interesting anecdotes and snippets of information.
For example: did you know that when you dial 999 from a mobile that it will use the strongest available network regardless of what network you're on? So always dial anyway even if you're not showing a signal. I did not know that.
Great stuff, we even got a nice goody bag, because you can never have too many buffs. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Also, fire engines never arrive with less than 5 people on them (unlike police or ambulance with one or two max), so you get much more manpower to help at the scene, and a big ass truck to block the road.
I also did this course recently, and although it was in a whole other country, it was exactly the same 3 sections (of which the same 2 were useful) and I rate it highly. ____________________ Bikers make great organ donors - add your name to the register

I am looking to do the same course together with several other friends that I regularly ride out with.Although I was trained in the Navy and have done a few other courses,to be trained by the Fire Brigade to do the basics to a motorcyclist is foremost on my mind (or a car occupant )
My previous training has been very worthwhile on quite a few occasions in my 40 years of riding bikes (but I will not go into that here as some of them revive all sorts of thoughts ) ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?

I did one in Devon a few weeks back, got a decent quality first aid kit out of it as well.
Overall, worth going. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
