PostPosted: 12:33 - 28 Jun 2015    Post subject: Insurance Confusion Reply with quote

Hi guys, first post on this forum as the other I'm a member of seems to have died a death.

Anyway I have a question regarding an insurance quote I have that maybe someone with more experience in the matter may be able to answer.

I've achieved a decent quote with MCE however I'm rather unsure about an option on the list of possible storage locations.

Basically my current living circumstances are the bike being stored in my back garden with a locked gate separating it from the outside world, however I've just been given the option to store it in a locked brick garage at a relatives who lives 20 minutes walk away. The options list of where the bike is stored at home address with MCE has an option of storage as 'kept on third party' which I'm guessing may be the closest to accurate as the bike obviously wouldn't be stored at home address.

I've tried getting in touch with them but the phone line has constantly been busy which obviously isn't putting them in a very good light but I'm hoping maybe someone on here could shed some light on the matter?

Does anyone else store their bike away from home address and if so how have you put it to the insurance?

Cheers guys (& girls).

That would be most appropriate option. Don't forget - with the insurance act going through a year or so ago the onus is on the insurer to ask a clear fair and not misleading question so it would be extremely unlikely they'd be able to reject any claim on the grounds of where it's stored. They may try though which would be inconvenient.

I'd not insure with MCE if they paid me rather than the other way round, mind you.

Is the garage at the relatives house? Or a separate garage?

Also begs the question, should the bike then be insured at their house, as it is kept there, and then use the brick garage option..

Arry is the professional, he should know!

It's very difficult to find any positive comments about MCE, the general concensus seems to be they're shiite, nearly as crap as Hastings.
Do some research and find a better insurer!

They had no issues with me storing my cbr250 20 miles away in a brick garage. Best to phone them, so any mistakes in choosing the correct option are their fault.

However I stated that they are kept on the road - which might cost a few pennies more, but means I am insured for theft if for any reason I left the bikes out (I might move and not have a garage, its cheaper to tell them now than when changing address).

Same with security chains. I might not use one 100% of the time (never on the CBR6) and I do not want it to be a condition for them to reject a claim.

In either circumstance they'd need to endorse the policy to restrict the cover. For garaging that's quite common outside of daylight hours but I've not seen a specific exclusion for theft whilst not chained. They'd really struggle relying on reasonable precautions or misrepresentation on that front.

And they do. I belive they endorse all policys with MCE3 (even if no security declared) and any garaged policies with 4 or 5. The definitions of the endorsements being in a separate document, which is not emailed with the others (there is a link to download it in a seperate document in the email, quite sneaky, as they could change the wording - does not appear to have a date/version).

Quote:
MCE3 – Excluding theft unless security device is fitted
10
We will not pay any theft claim under Section 1, ‘Loss or Damage’ to your motorcycle of this document
unless the security device fitted or applied to your motorcycle, which has been declared to us and for
which a reduction in premium has been given, is in working order and has been correctly attached and
switched on before the theft happened.

MCE4 – Garaged Vehicle Clause
You have agreed that You will keep Your Motorcycle in a locked garage or building either at your home
address or an address declared and specifically agreed by Us when your motorcycle is not being used.
We will not pay any theft claim under Section 1, ‘Loss or Damage’ If a theft or attempted theft of your
motorcycle happens within the proximity of your home address or the garaging address when your
motorcycle is not in a locked garage or building.

MCE5 - Garaged Vehicle Clause, increased Excess
You have agreed that you will keep your motorcycle in a locked garage or building either at your home
address or an address declared and specifically agreed by us when your motorcycle is not being used. If
a theft or attempted theft of your motorcycle happens within the proximity of your home address or the
garaging address when your motorcycle is not in a locked garage or building, we will double
the theft excess.

I agree, it was about 25% more (£250 total) for me to put "on street" so I went for it so I'd be covered if I decided to leave it out of the garage one evening. Well worth the peace of mind.

My MSX insurance has a specific exclusion for no Theft cover unless locked with a sold secure certified lock

Interesting. Just went back through my bike sure docs from when I disclosed a chain and nothing like that in there.

Definitely no worth declaring security then

I use a Sold secure disk lock in order to satisfy the criterion, as my chain isn't sold secure rated

On the topic of insurance I decided to check my documents, and found this:

MCE16 – Non approved repairer excess:

If following a claim you decide not to use our approved repairer then an additional excess of £300 applies.
This excess will apply in addition to any other excesses under your policy.

Shocked Sick

Only a few more months, only a few more Praying

I'd consider MCE policies to be effectively Third Party Only, regardless of what level of cover you think you're buying.

Quoting me £750 excess on both TPFT &. Full Comp on an Arrow, says it all.

Thou shall attempt to haggle at time of renewal, regardless of MCE being cheapest on insurance comparison sites or not, added to the fact that I want to buy next years policy instead of paying monthly, some shopping to be done.
