stuff sacks and large sleeping bags

right, first of all, I'm a prick who isn't willing to compromise as I like to sprawl when I sleep. I cannot sleep in a mummy sack.

as such I have the gelert sleeping pod xl sleeping bag. I find it good. it's a lovely place to be. So if it's rated shit for winter etc, I couldn't care less, my experience as someone who runs a little warmer than the average human anyway, is that it works for me.

but the bag it come with is shit, and it won't go small for the life of me.

if I buy a stuff sack, small duffle type thing, will I be able to make this bag small enough to carry on the bike without it being daft? (anyone got this sleeping bag and care to chime in on your solutions with it?)


tl:dr got a large sleeping bag, need to make it smaller so I can take it on bike easier.

only problem then is I don't take a hoover camping.

It depends on how big and fluffy your sleeping bag is, with the best quality stuff sack/compression bag you are only going to be able to squash it down to between 30-50% of its original size.

I can stuff my 2 season mummy bag down to around 25cmx35cm in its original bag, more if I got a better quality stuff sack and tried really hard.

Maybe something like this? and then a waterproof bag to put it in? That way you could bungee it anywhere on to your bike without having to worry about it getting wet?

Why do you need it to be small?
It'll weigh the same and if it's behind you etc, won't make much difference to aerodynamics.
I happily had my sleeping bag in a waterproof sack not squeezed tight on the outside of my bike quite 'big'.

Is that a down-filled bag you have there? If not, down packs down very small, and a 1 or 2 season bag should give you no problems.

You can also get 'duvets' for camping. I quite often unzip my sleeping bag all the way and use it as a duvet. But specific camping duvets tend to be a little less bulky than a bag - no zips, hoods, baffle strips etc.

needs to be small because it's huge... (granted my mrs packed it away last)

but the bag it come with doesn't close completely, it sort of relies on the bag itself forming part of the outer.... and has the compression straps, but since the bag isn't in it's stuff sack, they do shit...
