Mass snooping fake mobile towers 'uncovered in UK'

similar towers have been widely reported in the USA over the past few years
and the reports are increasing

Quote:
Fake mobile towers that scoop up data from passing phones are routinely being used in London, an investigation by Sky News suggests.

Working with German security company GMSK Cryptophone, it claims to have uncovered direct evidence, the first in the UK, of at least 20 instances of the use of these cell site simulators

These portable Stingray boxes could be used to track police suspects.

The Metropolitan Police Service refused to confirm or deny it was using them

Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe told Sky News: "We're not going to talk about it, because the only people who benefit are the other side, and I see no reason in giving away that sort of thing."

Privacy International (PI), which has been campaigning for more transparency about the use of surveillance equipment, described the Met's stance as "laughable".

Advocacy officer Matthew Rice said: "We can't be sure that all these are used by law enforcement agencies.

"They can be used by criminals, and are easily bought from the internet for about £1,000.

"The police need to explain what they are doing to protect the public from criminals using such equipment as well as explaining how they use it.

The more I read about the mass surveillance, the more I want to stop using a mobile phone.

If someone wants to spend £1000, or any money actually, to track my whereabouts they could at least give me the money and they could follow me in person if they liked. a win win situation.
Plus they would soon get bored of my mundane life anyway.

It's worse in China.

I joined the Baidu forums to have a go at using Chinese to talk with people.

Made a thread with a few pictures introducing North Yorkshire and stuff. Got a load of replies saying it looked nice etc. Thread was pretty active for a good week or so.

Then someone wrote a comment asking about my political views back home.

Thread deleted immediately!!!

The worrying thing there is that the Baidu forums have a ranking system where you simply need to get active enough and toe the line for long enough, until you can then just apply, online, to be one of their moderators, and then you're part of the moderating elite. Anyone can do it, in theory, as long as they play by the (glorified) rules.

So the Chinese people are watching each other, out of choice!

The only thing I'm surprised at is, that people are surprised that the security services are spying on us.

This is (allegedly) the Met, not MI5.

They have a very broad FOI exemption:

Still, never mind, I'm sure all appropriate secret checks and unverifiable safeguards are in place. Whistle

But. But. But . . .

Surely Privacy International, by virtue of its own philosophy, ought to respect wholeheartedly the Met's wont to keep shtoom about it.

I mean. Isn't it?

I pity the fool that has to review the data they collect.

They can spy on me, fuck it, enjoy wading through endless texts from the Wife asking me to pick up broccoli and other tedious consumables on the way home from work.

Of course "pick up brocolli" is code for "take delivery of a kilo of hash"

Whilst that may well work, people really shouldn't have to go to such extreme lengths to protect their privacy.

Or just message with a secure messaging app, then just log in at random times to get your messages. Then the 1984ers won't know where you are between times and they won't know what you said either. Chatsecure looks decent. open GPG is another option. Criminals though tend not to bother. Most normal don't use it either as both sides need to have the app/software.

MI5, GCHQ and the Police officers all snoop on us out of choice. Nobody makes them do it.

I have a German boss and he is paranoid about security and he won't use Whatsapp or even let his daughter use it.

Myself on the other hand could not careless.

I don't really care if someone wants to hack my account and see pictures of my dog retrieving a fish from the canal or some pictures of my Z750 by the Kilder dam, then that's fine with me.

I won't use it either. It's not hacking that's the isssue, it's that whatsapp requires you to hand over you entire phone contact list to put on their server, something that is completely unnecessary for the function!
