Ordered a new tank from eBay, £42.50, which brings the total so far to £194.35.
It's not identical, I think from a newer model but should fit.
https://i1013.photobucket.com/albums/af256/Roflhat/IMG_0600.jpg

Spent this morning modifying the seat. Took it off and marked 20mm all the way around, the borrowed an electric carving knife and set to it. Looked a bit rough after this so then tidied it up using a powerfile.
https://i1013.photobucket.com/albums/af256/Roflhat/IMG_0642.jpg

Overall probably just over 20mm taken off all around. Put the cover back on and used to rivets to hold it in place.
Here's before and after:

Hard to picture how it will look with the tank in place but hopefully alright

Does anyone know if there is a performance gain to be had from changing to a K & N style filter? The stock part looks quite restrictive. Also thinking about skimming the head

You possibly ruined a very rare seat there, but each to there own yeah?

You can't use a k&n as there is no stub on the back of the carb. The engine is in a low state of tune, so yes it will respond to tradition tuning methods (by a proper tuning shop, not some clown with a dremel and an orbital sander who's guessing). However bear in mind the clutch is minimalist and you only have a 4 speed box to keep it on the boil. I put a spanny on mine, was still shit.

Rare doesn't mean desirable...

I was thinking more replacing the rubber elbow with a steel or aluminium one and putting the filter on the end of that. Or even removing the elbow altogether and placing it there.

Been there.. You can fit a pod filter over teh stub on the clutch cover it's about 5mm proud of the cover, but you have to dispense with all the old style filter.

Was it worth it ? Doubtful. I think it made mine run worse. One other tip which more likely will improve air flow is to pack out the carb cover with extra gaskets (homemade is fine).

I had a go at tuning mine and it can make an indicated 70 - just about but then I'm a fairly weedy build. Can't remember full details but I widened and raised the exhaust port a couple of mm all round removed the steps between the liner and alumininium, knifed the transfer intakes and also trimmed the disc valve to increased intake duration I also fitted a slightly bigger main jet and found a chamber that looked about right (although that is really a very precise science).
I got the base information from the books by Bell and Robinson, but be warned these are heavy texts ..
If I could justify the money I would have sent it up to Mick Abbey for tuning. From what I hear he could probably increase it to 15 hp from a stock 9..

Have a go -what's teh worst that can happen ?

Great, thanks for the reply.
Did you try raising the compression?
That sounds like a good tip about the carb cover gaskets, think I'll give that a shot. Sounds like yours goes alright, I hit 35mph yesterday (downhill!)

I figured a bigger jet may be neccessary with improved air flow and more compression, did you drill the jet to a bigger size or buy a new one?
I think you're right about the expansion chamber, that's where the big gains are to be had, just don't want to put that sort of money into it. where did you get the chamber from? Do you think it improved the power?

I welded a GT50 Micron onto the stock down pipe. I wouldn't commission a custom chamber for a gAy100 lol!

I changed pilot and main jets (Allens performance is supplier for these). Drilling is highly ill-advised.. I think i ran it once without a head gasket after lapping the head onto barrel, don't recall the result but the compression increase was only slight. May try again one day.. Scoured ebay for the chamber and eventually scored one from a 250 twin it needed a bit of welding to fit it though (brackets and header adapter.. Will post a pic if I can remember how..

Cheers

Sounds interesting, I'll have to do some reading on expansion chambers.
Was out again today on it for a spin, reached a dizzying 45mph! 2up as well, although the wind was behind us

Very eagerly following this thread!

I am also working on a Suzuki A100 (1975, Canadian edition). Any updates lately?

I have just renovated a 1970 Suzuki A100. it's an early model and some variations apply to later models of the A100. In Australia for instance, the turn indicators are on left side of handlebars. On later models there's a switch contained in right hand brake lever which operates the back brake , besides the foot brake doing likewise. I added that feature for safety.
Plenty of cheap parts available on the Net, but you have to look for them. Most are after-market parts and not original. Not so many early models but 1972-73 parts always available from Thailand.
No good being impatient when ordering as most postage is 3 to 4 weeks, even for airmail.

Yeah I've had lots of luck finding parts on discountbikespares.co.uk for mine (and eBay) and I've already got a fairly big pile for when the weather warms up again. Every bike I've owned (of any age) has had the turn signal switch on the left, is that unusual in the UK or AUS? One major difference in the Canadian edition is there is no option to run the engine without the headlights on because it has been the law here for a long time that all running bikes have to have lights on. It's annoying because it means the wiring diagram in my Haynes manual is a bit wrong.

Had the bike out for a spin over the weekend, I've fitted an inline fuel filter and a new fuel tap. Bike started second kick after sitting for 5 months and first kick every time after that.

Thinking about changing the tires to slightly chunkier ones as most of the use is off road, anyone have any experience with this? There's not a lot of room for wider tread, even the thinnest offroad tires I've seen would be pretty close to hitting the frame. Was thinking a 100/100 would maybe fit on the back, and maybe even a push bike offroad tire on the front, 2.175" wide (standard is 2.50")

IIRC there was a nice 'trail' version of the A100 with a raised exhaust..

Look after yours they're worth GOLD these days, apparently..

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-A100-project-bike-/282606168709

Yeah OK no bids yet..

Ah really, do you know what it was called? All the off road tires I've seen have been 17, 19 or 21" instead of 18".
Found this on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nma3bpl5nyI

Saw that on ebay, price looks a bit optimistic by the seller even including all the shiny new bits!

Tyreleader seems to have a fair choice of trail and enduros for 18". Cant remember if a 3.00 width will fit on the A100 through..

Name of the street trail version BTW was AC100

If a 3.00 will go on without issue then that would be grand, ideally someone else has tried it!

Bought a new tyre for the rear, its a 3.00x18 Duro bought from Oponeo. Took a while to fit it as the old inner tube kept bursting so eventually I replaced that too. Both the chain adjusters snapped during removal so I've had to improvise new ones.
Bike looks pretty smart with the new tyre on it
https://image.ibb.co/nNWDXm/IMG_3287.jpg
https://image.ibb.co/nKfkdR/IMG_3288.jpg

Also found that the banjo for one of the oil feeds in with the carb had completely shattered, was just a plastic job so I bought a brass replacement and fitted it. The oil in the oil tank is slowly going down which is good as it means oil is getting through. Might still run a bit of oil in the fuel just to be on the safe side, it runs fine with it anyway.

Replaced the spark plug too, engine wasn't starting so well. Back to running sweet now!

Might get another Duro tyre for the front yet

Haha - so now you have a 'Dual Sport' machine - nice.
Stealth rear light looks good too.

Sometime back you asked for pic of teh chamber well here goes..https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nLBRkLnwnKjtKg5sHFHSRiHIdsnCDjaAgfKws0WBw7VqB5LQ4NuuAfuHaAhY8jku6-o9uHAhHtzafFFubJ38GVrSYHo4hJbyF5CCDwRGccCOz39OdLQWQCaU5XmTKz6IYVZ_c5SwNqDCGyZX7xOQwAkH6ahy9VN3mngZmZbTt1TYmXiRW8z_GylHMxJDw3_uuTEqzv6KEHptKlntJb7ec1dDyseNkyt0yYbw2mJsHSHBhWMwNOSeOShL_bqFpB6mMc4h8zejVxKyy000_7LqSa2vYP1DQ5lmgLg7iw8iJeaVYKcYBGQnhRBmYfL79yFAA-_Uy94GF4xoRZIV39-VyWz7KRZMVM4PEDfwZLwtjNI_HCrkBhGq0ID6OuvV8eImKAw78H4zpEcuOr3W8wYi1ZmiWZVVAHqy9cT23Xc9RUWTFRJ6RFsHafbI2BUqNfFAyVizynBWdjChs217BsPZHJzTaQCXONyxgDsQJhuQkTsyTedV63g9QDwKfkTAh3y-KvnIyB5WuBCpFIIP2iWAeOzA-l6z2lJjpNTHNxx4uMOZa1vzduAYR5f8zqJNIrlFlkEm65_NSSkXyGgvbUpufNqZ5VakUO-3NPY4j2QyYA=w1299-h974-no

thanks, although it's function before form I think it looks pretty cool. I measured the tires quickly and I think the same tire would fit on the front too. Would definitely help as even on wet grass the front is all over the place

My mates had a shot of it offroad at the weekend but unfortunately fell off it and bent the rear brake lever. I've bent it back a wee bit but it still kits the engine casing.

That's a smart looking chamber, fits the bike well. I'm not going to spend much money on my bike, the inside of the frame is rusty so I'll just use it offroad.

Adjusted the rear brake too so it works really well and oiled the chain

I had two A100’s in days gone by and loved them.
With all the bikes I’ve had and with what I own now (ZX6r) , I still would have another if I had the space Shifty Thinking

Pity to use it off road as it would make a good runabout, a bit of a classic.

A chinky 125 would be a better off road as they have no real value, for us brits at any rate.

It's too rusty to realistically use on the roads again. There are bits inside the frame that have rusted through, hence the decision to make it more of an off-road bike.

Did a motorbike tour of Vietnam in December, bought an old "Honda" Win, which was a vietnamese copy, 110cc. Was a great little bike, similar design to the A100 but four stroke engine.
https://preview.ibb.co/dp2Rgb/26695052_1785029444871684_1306837230_o.jpg

Absolutely amazing experience, highlight was definitely the Hai Van Pass
https://preview.ibb.co/mZLU1b/26692513_1785029451538350_1459916123_o.jpg

Took the bike out for a spin yesterday, down to the beach

https://preview.ibb.co/bByhMb/26695632_1785029248205037_1107769928_o.jpg

Then today put the new front tire on it, same as the rear 3.00x18 Duro. Fits perfectly, had to move the mudguard up to the bottom set of holes. Bought a new pair of shocks in Vietnam too, from a Yamaha but they fit perfectly, they're maybe 15mm shorter but stiffer so should work well, the old ones were squeeking badly.
