PostPosted: 18:59 - 06 Apr 2020    Post subject: Givi - Am I Being Dumb? Reply with quote

Hi guys just after some help please.

I had a 1999 FZS600 and replaced it with a 2014 FZ1. The top box I had on the old FZS600 was a Monokey Trekker Outback 58 fitted with an M3 plate.

I bought the bike-specific rack for the new bike along with the M5M mounting plate that the Givi website said I needed for the rack.

I thought the Monokey Outback would swap straight over but was disappointed to see that the mounting plates are completely different and not interchangeable. I offered my old M3 plate up against the rack on the new bike and doesn't look like it's compatible either so the long and short is I've had to down-size to a Monolock B47 Blade which is the largest box I can get that is compatible with the new mounting plate.

So now I'm ready to list the old Outback on eBay but before I do so I just wanted to be 100% sure - I'm not missing something here am I? Is there actually a way of making the Outback fit on my new bike by using a different mounting plate or is there just no way this can be done?

Please advise!

Also worth noting the new B47 top box came with it's own fitting plate in addition to the M5M I bought separately but the included plate didn't seem to match up against the bike rack. Not sure why this is included???

Think your bike specific is a monolock plate and not a monokey. They are distinctly different fits, I had a similar problem with my tiger 800. Now have a spare top box too! If you have a carrier rack you can normally fit a monokey plate to one of them. Then buy a kappa branded top box for a substantial amount less!

Thanks for your help!

So have I got this right that all Givi racks are EITHER Monolock OR Monokey?

In other words, your choice of bike (and the rack that Givi make for your bike) determines whether you can use one or the other? And there's no way of fitting a Monokey mounting plate to a Monolock rack?

Is there no solution to using my Outback on my new bike?

Yeah, pretty much sums up the quandary. The only way I could around it would be to fit a renntec (or similar make) rear rack and bolt a monokey plate onto that. They're pretty adaptable as the holes and choke can go anywhere suitable. Put a monokey plate onto Mrs Ks r1200r quite easily.

Nevermind. The Outback 58 always looked really goofy on the FZS600 anyway and I'm sure the max weight that the box was rated for was more than the rack/bike was rated for. At least the B47 Blade suits my new bike better although the extra space would have been nice :-/

Just fit a Monokey M5 plate or let me know what you want for the box?

People tend to overcomplicate this. You can fit either Monolock or Monokey plates, they are interchangeable.

Oh really? Oh sweet!

Yeah I think to reason people overcomplicate it is because Givi's naming scheme is so bloody confusing! Not to mention their website. If you're new to the whole rack / plate / box combination to get the desired setup it is bloody confusing! Givi don't make it easy for newcomers to understand how their product range works.

The Givi website said the only plates that were compatible with my rack were the M5M or the M6M, the only difference between the two that I can tell being that the M6M wolds a D-lock which I don't use one anyway so I just ordered the M5M which is a monoLOCK plate and therefore was dictated by that as to which top box I could use. But you're saying the M5 is compatible with my rack and is monoKEY? That solves my problem! Why couldn't I find that info on the bloody website EmbarassedEvil or Very Mad

Yeah it does look a bit goofy on this bike (and the last bike) but for some reason this photo makes it look worse that it actually is, it seems to have stretched the photo for some reason???!!! Loving the extra luggage space though!

Didn't want to put side panniers on it though as it would increase the width of the bike / decrease the filtering ability :-/

Hence I went for the biggest top box possible.
