Bike Buying Experiences 2

Saw the other thread on this just as i was about to add my bit so pinched the title.

I bid on a bike on ebay and won.
The advert said "can arrange delivery" and "accepts paypal"

I phoned the bloke after it ended on Friday morning, to sort out delivery, he told me he'll give me the number of the bloke that normally delivers for him so i can sort it out.
He then told me he doesnt use paypal and can i pay by bank transfer!! Alarm bells ringing.

I rang him back Friday evening and told him i'll hire a van and collect it myself (130miles away) and i'll pay cash when i get there, he laughed when i said that!
I said i'll be there on monday and gave him a rough time that i should be there.
He seemed ok with that but said to ring him sunday to confirm.

I send a text asking for his address, no reply
I sent a message through ebay asking for his address, no reply
And i've rang him a couple of times today, no answer.

Now given i've won the auction, can i be forced into paying, i've never had any problems like this before on ebay.
My feeling is to walk away and forget about it, but what comeback is there on me for not paying?


I'll just add he has 2 negative feedback in the last few months for ending auctions after they had finished where someone had won but he wouldnt let them have it!!!

I'm done with "very reluctant sellers". He's clearly not bothered about selling it; probably just another of those twunts who don't put a reserve on but have one in mind.

One more message through eBay saying that you regret that he's been unwilling to arrange delivery or collection, then start looking for another bike.

I'm pretty sure that ebay sellers must accept paypal as a condition of sale. You can probably be forced to pay but it would have to be through paypal.

I've had an online chat with someone from ebay, they sort of agree that this isnt right, its hard to tell im guessing its a call centre far far away.

We are with you in resolving any concern or issue from this seller so we will help you in the removal of any record in case the seller will open an unpaid item case.

I've done all i can to contact the bloke to get an address for collection, i'll try him again tomorrow.
I'm not happy that since our conversation when he said it would be ok to collect on monday i've hired a van (paid for) so im picking a van up at 8am tomorrow and all i know is that hes somewhere in Stoke.

About 20mile past Stoke there is a similar bike for sale, im tempted to drive to Stoke in the morning ring him again when i get there, if i get no answer drive on and get the other bike.


Since my first post ive done some searching and found the bike (same reg, model, colour i.e. same bike) has been on a couple of for sale sites in the last 3mths, 1 in Warrington, and 2 just giving Lancashire as the location, in the first add it had done 11,212 miles, in the 2nd add had done 11,213 and on ebay it has done 11,214miles all taken from the pictures showing the speedo.
The ebay location is down as Stoke, which is neither in Warrington or Lancashire.
It sounds a bit dodgy, doesn't it?

Update on this.

I got up in the morning nice and early to go and collect the hire van, before i left i checked my email and found he had replied to my request for an address, and when i turned my phone on there was a text saying the same.

I found out later he had a bit of a crisis over the weekend and replying to people on ebay wasnt at the top of his list.

I arrived at his house, found a very pleasant bloke, had a good chat and i left with the bike, which was in better condition than his advert suggested, so it all ended well.

Got it home it started 4th kick, not to bad as i was told it hadnt been started for a couple of months.
It seems to original to restore so i'm just going to leave it as is for now, tax & mot exempt and about £20 to add to my current policy.
All i can find wrong is the carb tickler sticks so it leaks petrol a bit, the horn and brake light dont work, and it needs a new battery, so a bit of tinkering this weekend and i can play out on it.
