PostPosted: 10:37 - 29 Jun 2015    Post subject: Coccyx Pain / Motorcycle - MTB Reply with quote

Now im expecting a lot of very immature comments but recently i have been getting pretty soar pain in my coccyx when riding the KTM 990SM. I have never had this pain before and had the bike for over 5 years but when i accelerate hard the pressure going down is pretty unpleasant to say the least.

Im pretty sure the pain is from MTB which i have been trying to do a lot of to help get fit and lose some weight. Does anyone else have this problem?

How long have been riding the MTB? The saddle soreness should last no more than a week and tbh, most saddles do not put pressure on the coccyx anyway. It could be an ingrown hair down there. Genuinely. They can become infected down to the bone and need to be looked at. If you're not sure visit your GP. Don't leave it

No idea about your cocyx, however in comparison to bikes 20 to 30 years ago modern bike seats are really uncomfortable.
Riding for more than a hour normally becomes less than comfortable.
Seats used to be a good 4 to 6 inches of foam, now you'd be lucky to get 2 inches of padding/gel on anything other than a tourer, but hey, progress innit!

These feel as if the would cause discomfort to the coccyx when you first get into the saddle, but for me they did not.

Kevlar jeans with knee protectors and you are armoured up too.

I used them on a 'bum-number' saddle, made a positive difference, I could ride at least twice as far before my bum died.

£20 on it being one or more pilonial cysts - when a ingrown hair becomes infected!

I had a couple a few years ago and while not pleasant, they are easy for a doc to get rid of Thumbs Up

Cheers for the comments think i will go to the docs and get it checked out. The KTM has a touring gel seat on it and ive never had any issues with it, well i learned fairly tight boxes stop getting a numb bum. I did 250 miles on Saturday and on the way back i eased off a fair bit just to ease the pain. Its not when im just sitting down on the bike its more when i accelerate hard and it compress down on the saddle, i dont get it sitting on my office chair etc.

could be saddle angle on the MTB, to ease the pressure on the coccyx you need to raise the front of the saddle slightly - should be a 5mm allen key bolt on the underside to do this

sharp pain and/or numbness would point to pilonidal sinus. You may feel a lump under the skin, and in time it will start to hurt (feels a bit like one of those nasty spots under the skin). Dr may opt to have a go at it first time round under local anaesthetic, but it often comes back and requires a larger chunk to be extracted under general.

I think it fits pretty well, i dont get any discomfort from it while riding tbh. I would say if anything i got soar knees but i think that was down to working harder gears too much. Its a 29er im 6ft 3 its not the largest frame as it would bust my nuts.

Have a look around YouTube at setting a bicycle up to fit you, you can get quite a few aches and pains from an incorrectly set bicycle.

Full suspension bikes are alot nicer on the old arse. Have you also tried the padded shorts?

I have been borrowing a hardtail from the stores here, and it allways kills afterwards. Cannot justify 2-3k on a push bike though...

Might just get a MX bike.

Sorting out the position of the saddle sounds like a good first step, if nothing else, it's something to try before going and asking your GP to finger your bum hole. Laughing

Three guesses... your saddle is too low, it's also further back than it should be and the front of the saddle needs to be higher than it is. Thumbs Up

A good quality, reasonable full suspension 2nd hand bike is the Boardman FS Team or FS Pro. Both available from £400/£500 on the bay...

Which will be just as comfortable as a hardtail bike that's setup properly. Thumbs Up

Full suspension, hard tail or no suspension... if the seat isn't setup correctly then it's going to be a PITA. Wink

Get a dropper post and probably get a new saddle that's less stiff! The dropper post allows you to set your seat height to whatever is required for the terrain, i.e. all the way up for climbs, and down out of the way for descents. No suspension is offered from them, but it does allow you to find the most optimum body position for peddling etc.

Secondly, a saddle that is more compliant will also help. I use a Charge Spoon - affordable and pretty flexible. My coccyx was getting hammered with my stiff saddle on descents and climbs.

And ALWAYS ride with a chamois if you're doing long rides. Your butt will thank you for it!
