Hey,

I know there is another thread about filtering on zigzags but it said about creating a new one....

I uploaded a video on my YouTube Channel and had a comment saying how filtering is legal but filtering when passing traffic on zebra crossings isn't.

I wasn't sure which clip he seen as I didn't go over any zebra crossings in the video, only thing he could of been on about is the zigzags by traffic lights/pedestrian crossing.

There was stopped traffic in my lane, and moving traffic coming the opposite way, the lights were flashing amber for awhile before I actually got to them, and by the time I got to them a Car and Bus in the opposite lane was already passed the lights (while on amber), my lane was still at a stand still before and after the lights, the lights actually turned green just as I passed the car at the lights (so I actually passed when on green), and as I got over the crossing, that Car started to move, the only reason I did this was because I was actually turning left and not going straight on like all the Cars were doing, and the left turning was only a small way after the lights/crossing, I didn't overtake any moving Cars apart from 1 which was after the crossing and had just started to move.

Is this wrong or is it ok?

but there is no zebra crossing, just zigzag lines for a lighted pedestrian crossing, and everything was at a stand still, and I wasn't going the same way as them, if there is space, and the lights are on green, and i'm turning left, then I don't really want to wait ages in that traffic when they're all waiting to go straight, and that street is awful as there is a set of lights at the very end of that street which doesn't stay on for long as it's only a small thin side street, hence why I go left to miss it all.

It's not legal to pass the car at the front IF it has stopped to allow pedestrians to cross. If it's stuck in traffic and there are no pedestrians then it's fine.

What is illegal is passing the front car (ie the one nearest the crossing), which is what you did, so yes, they are right. You can pass the cars behind them (within the zigzags), just not the one at the front.

Also, filtering on the left... Shocked

Cars were stopped due to traffic, no pedestrians.

Yep Rolling Eyes I had to get home for a delivery, and that road is awful at that time, no room for a Bike to go on the right, and as there was space, and I was turning left, and all the Cars were at a stand still, and lights were green and no people, I went.

From your position on the road though you couldn't possibly have seen if the car had stopped for pedestrians or not.

The lights started to flash amber before I got to the Cars, I could see the full crossing when I got to the white Van, when I got to the red Car a Car and the Bus was already going on the opposite side, I could clearly see there were no people going to cross, by the time I got to the crossing (black Mercedes and light turned green), the Car and Bus had gone through the other side, and there was a stopped car on the other side of the crossing, so he (black Mercedes) wasn't going anywhere anyway.

Basically just wan't to know the exact legal info for this type of thing, as obviously some saying it's ok and some saying it isn't, so would just be good to know the exact info for future knowledge.

Shit this thread just taught me something new. I've been passing the lead car at zigzags the whole time. :S even in front of coppers sat opposite. How strange. Shocked

Shall we read the actual law? They were having a bit of a laugh when they wrote it, we have to read the whole thing:

The actual law wrote:
Road marking shown in diagram 1001.3: zig-zag lines—no overtaking

28.—(1) Without prejudice to regulation 27, a zig-zag line shall convey the requirement that, whilst any motor vehicle (in this regulation called “the approaching vehicle”) or any part of it is within the limits of a controlled area and is proceeding towards the signal-controlled crossing facility to which the controlled area relates, the driver of the vehicle shall not cause it or any part of it—

(a) to pass ahead of the foremost part of any other motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction; or

(b) to pass ahead of the foremost part of a vehicle which is stationary for the purpose of complying with the indication given by a traffic light signal for controlling vehicular traffic.

(2) In paragraph (1)—

(a) the reference to a motor vehicle in sub-paragraph (a) is, in a case where more than one motor vehicle is proceeding in the same direction as the approaching vehicle in a controlled area, a reference to the motor vehicle nearest to the signal-controlled crossing facility to which the controlled area relates; and

(b) the reference to a stationary vehicle is, in a case where more than one vehicle is stationary in a controlled area for the purpose of complying with the indication given by a traffic light signal for controlling vehicular traffic, a reference to the stationary vehicle nearest the signal-controlled crossing facility to which the controlled area relates.


Do as thou wilt, but thou wilt not pass the nearest vehicle to the crossing, regardless of whether the lights are green and it's moving, or they're red and it's stopped.

You can pass if (and only if) the lights are green and the traffic is stationary.

Note that it doesn't seem to prevent you pulling alongside the lead vehicle, just so long as no part of your bike is past the most forward part of the vehicle at the front.

Indeed, but one of you then needs to "pass ahead" of the other once you start moving.

Thanks...

Seems a bit stupid, if there is a long road full of stopped traffic, and the traffic is before and after the lighted crossing, and even though my turning is just feet from that crossing, and the light is on green but the Car can't go due to traffic anyway, then why should I sit on the side on that Car and wait for it to move.

If this commenter is wrong, you won't convince him otherwise - youtube commenters can be very determined.

Reading the "law" above, if the car is stopped because it's on Red or it's stopped to allow a citizen to use the zebra crossing, don't pass it, hang back til it moves. If it's stopped for traffic and nobody is wanting to cross the zebra go for it.
