ZZR Problem (won't rev, poor power)

Hi all,

My '90 ZZR400 has been acting up lately...it doesn't rev all the way to the redline, it hits about 11k and sounds like it's hitting the limiter (revs go crazy jumping between 9k and 14k, sounds like only firing on 3 cylinders) whilst coughing out black smoke (stationary). Whilst riding it revs okay, and will hit the redline, but has a major flatspot at 4k and 12k and is lacking in power somewhat.

I've balanced the carbs, cleaned the air filter, put new sparkplugs in....I'm stumped, can anyone help?

I'm really hoping it's not the valves, they probably need to be re-shimmed.

Know where I can get Kawasaki valve shims from? Other than paying expensive dealer prices

Hi

Think the ZZR shims are not difficult to change. Don't think the cams have to come out.

Is one of the exhausts cold / cooler than the others?
