Hey all, random, and once again, noob Question. (well two questions)

1, is it worth while buying the premium petrol from fuel stations? Its not much money more, but is it worth it?

2, Is it worth using the fuel cleaner every now and again, and if so, who often Smile

Thank you all.

Thumbs Up

From general opinion that I've encountered preimum unleaded has no benefits over unleaded at supermarket petrol stations.

Using a shell garage as opposed to supermarket fuel seems to be recommended, I've always done the opposite, should really see if the grass is greener on the other side some day Thinking

Try the super unleaded for a few tanks and see, won't do any harm apart from to your wallet.

Some people say that they have seen more miles per tank with it but you would need to do a back to back test for proper proof. Your bike is designed to run on 95 fuel so why waste money?

Normal petrol is fine.

Super unleaded generally contains more detergent. This cleans things. If your bike has been sitting for a long time and the carbs are full of varnish, super unleaded may shift it slightly faster than regular, although both would eventually do it. A proper carb clean would be the right way to do it.

If the engine is choked up with carbon deposit, super unleaded may shift them a bit quicker than regular - but both of them will do it eventually.

Hi

Depends what you mean by premium unleaded.

If you just mean a fuel with a higher octane rating then for 99% of bikes it will have zero benefit. A tiny number of bikes have a knock sensor to detect knock and allow the ECU to retard / advance the ignition timing to go with it. If you have a bike that requires high octane fuel, then using low octane fuel is likely going to cause severe engine damage.

If you mean one of the other fuels then maybe. Some have a claimed higher energy content, some contain better detergent packages.

All the best

K

Ok thank you all, what about those bottles of fuel cleaner that you can put into a tank of petrol? Smile

Wouldn't ever go there. Gone are the days where you need to stick in STP, octane boosters, snake oil etc.

If you are laying up your bike for a while, fill up with super first. It has less, or no ethanol content, that's the stuff that goes off quickly and gums things up.

I'd possibly use a pour in injector cleaner on an older or high miles EFI engine, or one that spends months at a time sat unused etc.

petrol fuel injectors can get dirty and gummed up a bit, and there's no DIY way to safely clean and test them.
