Silencer can compatibility?

Was having a look at aftermarket cans and they seem to have all different versions for all different bikes. Bit too much to spend on the little workhorse though.

Is there actually a difference between the silencers or is it most likely just the fittings that are different?

Could I grab any old 2nd-hand aftermarket can and get someone to weld me a link pipe?

Find or have someone to fabricate this (then you can use whatever exhaust silencer that would fit, for example to any GSXR, ZXR, CBR from the 90's and maybe even newer bikes, I'm not sure since the newest thing with that king of silenecer in my garage is a '99 CBR 919 RR):
