Master Bennetts Said:

"Dependant on what you requested when buying your policy we will either:
a) advise you of the renewal cost and auto-renew your policy
b) advise you of the renewal cost and invite you to renew with us"

Source:
https://www.bennetts.co.uk/policy/help-advice/bike-insurance-renewals

(URL wont work when clicked on the forum but works by pasting into url? Confused )

So they either tell you how much they're going to rob you for becuase "chepest price on screen init, soz m8" or they'll ask you if you want to robbed for a legal requirement before begging forced to get robbed anyway.

MCE Doesn't, or at least says that it doesn't, although they've very conveniently made the text nice and clear for us to read, literally the quality of the wording on the email Neutral

And when I phoned to say I couldn't do it online

They gave me an even cheaper price

I don't get it with my travel, my car, my vans, my household, my businesses or my landlord insurance policies.
Maybe it is just a bike thang.

I've had it with a dozen different insurers over the years, never come across one that didn't work like that (and I work for one now).

It's not that unusual and it shouldn't make much difference whether it's invited or assumed anyway. Just call up and cancel it if you want to go elsewhere—they shouldn't charge a cancellation fee if you do it before the policy renews.

It's not really a trick; it ought to be mentioned somewhere in your documentation that they operate this way. If you're happy with the policy (and lazy), it means that you have less to do when it comes around to renewal and it's usually also quicker and easier for the insurer or broker to renew a policy than it is to invite renewal and then wait for instructions.

Sure, you can probably get a lower premium if you shop around each year but you'd be surprised at how many people aren't bothered.

InB4 arry: they should have sent you a letter several weeks before the renewal date. There's no good Goddamn reason they couldn't all do it by email - I rather suspect it's so that some of them can get "lost".

Could be worse, it could be Hastings Direct who send letters saying that they're going to renew, rather annoyingly offering a renewal price that beats anything I can find elsewhere, but then not actually issuing a new policy or certificate until you call them up. Twice now.

Where did you get that from? There's nothing on their website about it.

I took out my insurance policy with them and asked them over the telephone.

Herp de derp.

Regardless of that the person over the phone says, have a look through your policy documents.

Nice one. They tried to rip me off with that trick.

I'll give them a ring at renewal time and see what they have to say.

When I took out my policy this year I stated, as I always do, that I'm giving notice that I don't want the policy to auto-renew. The CN call centre monkey said 'Oh, we don't auto-renew anymore'.

Of course, if I'd rung five minutes earlier/later and got a different one, who knows? Laughing

Carole Nash f@cked me last year. This time around, they are claiming to have stopped their policy of unsolicited auto-renewal.

If they have not, I will put it on this forum as they would have lied to me.

Specifically:

1. There is no correspondence from them claiming auto-renewal
2. There is nothing in the existing paperwork
3. Over the telephone, they confirmed verbally there is no auto-renewal
4. I specifically requested no auto-renewal.

Let's see what happens.

Just read your insurance policy documents, save yourself the possible hassle of having to sort out whatever problems are created should they automatically your policy. Wink

I renewed my insurance with Bennett's today by phone.

I just about caught them mentioning something about auto renewal when giving them payment details but the lady was so grumpy I didn't bother querying it.

To be fair my renewal was within £5 of the cheapest I could find anywhere after much research and they were pretty decent when I last needed their help.

Also realised afterwards that they'd increased my voluntary excess by £50 on last years. Excess now exceeds value of bike but I guess thats irrelevant as its generally a right off before the insurance gets involved.

One thing I didn't realise until speaking to them today is that the policy I've got with them allows me to ride other people's bikes with 3rd party cover. Unlucky if you know me, I may be riding your sweetheart soon!

Excess is payable if you're claiming from your own policy, be it a TPFT policy or a fully comp policy.

Depending on the value of your bike, your age and a whole host of other factors, should your bike get nicked you might be financially worse off by claiming against your TPFT insurance.

Oh, and as for not knowing that your policy included riding others peoples bikes that sounds like a very good example of why you should read your policy documents. Wink

its hardly a trick when they send you a reminder letter detailing it will renew and what price it will be.

this is generally the time you shop around and ring them to say yay or nay.
