if I had meant astrology I would have said Astrology, just as if I had asked "do you believe in Gnomes", I am talking things in the night ( and presumably
day sky) (not bats, we all believe in bats).

Yes, I believe there are people out there studying celestial objects. Some on this very forum have owned up to it.

Given astronomy is a science I'm not sure how you disbelieve in it, given its been proven, unlike astrology

Unless of course your of the religious persuasion, in which case magic sky fairies

How can you not... it's science.

"The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it."

And if you don't believe in science, where there's evidence and proofs, that just makes you uneducated/naive/idiot.

I'm not at all sure I buy into the whole big bang imploding/exploding universe thing. It all seems a bit ... "convenient", actually.

But I'm very fond of the Sombrero galaxy, so I will just have to go along with it ... for now; see how things pan out in a couple of hundred millenia or two.

If you could put the universe into a tube you'd end up with a very long tube umm, probably extending twice the size of the universe because when you collapse the universe it expands and uhhh, you wouldn't want to put it into a tube

That's because it's not proven science, only theory Smile

Answer to OP's question, yes of course.

Secondly, "It's only a theory!" is a fallacy that has developed from I know not where. Theory in this context is proven beyond most reasonable doubts. The way you use the term theory, you should really be using the term hypothesis. The big bang is hardly a hypothesis any more, and has been backed up by infra red astronomy and a few other methods.

The scientific education in this country is dire, and this is why we get anti vaxxers, chem trail believers and Hetzer. Confused

Of course it isn't proven in the way that you can't prove I'm wearing a red T shirt, you personally don't possess any evidence that I'm wearing a red T shirt, but if scientists spent years and years analysing the colour and composition of the garment on the top half of my body in order to determine what type of garment it is, and what colour, they could be pretty certain that it's a red T shirt.

Proof in a court is not the same as scientific proof, and a jury could be made to believe that my T shirt is actually pink or orange or that because it has black writing on it, it doesn't count as red. A scientist would do an experiment and the results would tell him that it's a red T shirt with black text.

When you look up at the sky at night, you don't actually see anything. Your brain registers signals sent from your eyes as 'light', which in turn you chose to decipher as solid objects because you are told that this is what they are. In this respect you are going on 'trust' that everything you have been told really exists. Why should astronomy be more trustworthy than the Bible, Koran or Wizzer and Chips?

Not sure what you mean but after using a telescope and taking pictures of nebulae and galaxies i am inclined to believe that most stuff i read/see in astronomy books is indeed real.

You should really learn what 'theory' means in science before you make statements like that. Razz Laughing
