Having some starting issues with my R125 over the past few days.

It started the otber day when leaving work. I pressed the ignition button and it started fine, then within a few seconds the revs dropped and the bike cut out. This happened a couple of times but, was fine after I gave it a few revs on starting up. I should add that on a couplefof those occasions that the bike wouldn't fire up.

Anyway, I rode home (about 20 miles) without further issue.

Then this evening, when setting off for work, it did the same. Sterted up on ignition and then the revs dropped and it cut out, only this time it wouldn't start up again. I tried about 30+ times in the space of around 30-40 minutes and although the electric ignition is trying to fire the engine up, it was having non of it.

So after cancelling work this evening and walking to the shop and back, I decided to try the bike again (this was about 30 mins later) and it started up first time with no problem. I have given it some high revs, let it idle for around five minutes or so and turned it off and restarted it numerous times since and every time it has fired up instantly.

Obviously, something is going on and I don't want to take it for a ride at the moment in case I get stranded.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on?

Apologies for the long post but, I thought it best to give as much info as possible.

Is there a fuel pump? It'd be worth checking the pump works well.

I was thinking that it might be a fueling issue, although I have virtually no mechanical knowledge. Also, last time I filled up I used the Morrisons supermarket garage, which is something I rarely do, as I mainly use the higher quality petrols (shell V power etc...), so am wondering if that could be the problem.

Cheap/disreputable petrol often contains water, dirt and even diesel. Thinking

Fair call actually, I changed the fuel pump on one of these a couple of months ago. The impellor had seized. I stripped the end off the pump and got it working until the replacement arrived.

There was a recall but this bike was way later than the ones recalled.

Where the fuel line goes into the carb there is a little filter as I recall, check it's clean. If you suspect shit petrol just drain it and fill with decent stuff. Fit a good quality iridium plug if you haven't already.

^^^Cheers, will check that out.

The spark plug was only changed a few weeks ago, not sure if it was an iridium one or not though.

I probably should have mentioned in my op that it's a 2012 model and done around 26,000 miles. Has been serviced regularly and oil changed and checked frequently. It also has just had a new air filter fitted a few weeks ago too.

How likely is it for the supermarket fuel to cause such an issue, out of interest?

Not likely.

The one I did the pump on was also a 2012.

I've decided to go ahead and replace the fuel pump, as this seems the most likely problem, according to the interwebs and a mechanic I spoke to this morning and if nothing else it'll rule it out at least.

Popped into my local Yammy dealer before, £128 plus VAT for the part. Shocked

Told him I'll be back if I can't source one elsewhere. Ordering one off ebay for £39:99. Thumbs Up

Well, I replaced the fuel injector system yesterday and all seemed good.

However, started it up this morning and the same problem occured again. Brick Wall

Don't really know what is causing the issue now but, although the battery appears fine, I guess I should buy a battery tester and check it out properly. Confused

Once the bike has had a little run out it is starting perfectly, the problem only happen when it's been left for a few hours.

If anyone has any other ideas as to what may be causing the problem, I'd be grateful.

So far I have changed the spark plug, checked the fuel tank for any water or debris and replaced the fuel pump/injector and checked the wires and hoses.

I also gave it a kick this morning

Battery is just under three years old, done around 26,000 miles.
