I love how they say they want to catch those "on autopilot" or "not paying attention", so yes, a zero tolerance approach on speeding will get these people. Mugs. Rolling Eyes

Obviously people should be paying a lot more attention to their speedo than their surroundings!

And of course, all speedos are 100% accurate and take into account the impact of tyre wear on the reading, albeit a small one.

Not sure of the exact law, but I thought they were allowed to be up to 10% over-reading to account for that, but not under-reading at all.

Current law is
Code:
(speed limit+10%) +2mph

afaik

With regards to tyre wear, unless the speedometer is calibrated for certain make/model of tyre and only that make/model of tyre is used the readings are going to be all over the place.

Never been law as far as I know.

Law has always been speed limit + 1/∞ as far as I know - but realistically maybe 1mph over.

Guidelines for prosecution vary by area, however and are something like you posted.

[t'borg]
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/27/section/89
(1)A person who drives a motor vehicle on a road at a speed exceeding a limit imposed by or under any enactment to which this section applies shall be guilty of an offence.
[/t'borg]
No mention of 'plus a little bit' etc.

Meh, at 140 on the back wheel there's no danger of them getting my number plate.

To be honest, after the first 200 refuse the b̶r̶i̶b̶e̶ penalty and choose to go to court, this will fall flat on the police's face, courtesy of the CPS cos they have better things to do with their time.

The police will be too busy catching smokers with kids in the car to do this

Hi

Doubt they will bother issuing tickets. Far more profitable to send people on the speed awareness courses.

All the best

Yes, that'll be the performance metric, I'm sure of it.

Q: Speed is the primary factor in what % of road collisions?

A: 5%.

I came across a breakdown of accident factors a while back, covered things like speed, booze, being a teenager and so on. IIRC each single factor only amounted to 5% to 7%, so there's nothing you can deliver a magic bullet to that'll have a significant impact statistically.

Wasn't "inattentiveness" the number one reason at 20% or something?

Perhaps it's time I considered taking a zero tolerance approach on having a number plate.

of course we all know that by driving at 80 mph on the motorway will result in instant death if the car in front so much as touches his brake pedal unless your on the continent of course where Europeans reaction times are so much better than us Brits that they're allowed to drive at these supersonic speeds,
and don't get me started on Germany with their autobahns it must be carnage everyday I imagine they've got snowplough type things running up and down the autobahns just scraping the bodies of the roads Shocked

The "law" is that 1mph over is a criminal offence and it always has been. That's why is called a speed limit rather than a speed recommendation.

What are you on about?

I expect ther'll be a court case where the magistrate will take the common sense approach that since neither speedometers or radar guns can ever be 100% accurate, you can never have a zero tolerance to a recorded speed. Ultimately what's acceptable will be decided by the organ grinder, not the monkies.

Sheriff, not Magistrate(s).

Whether the speedo is 100% accurate is irrelevant, and it must not read low anyway.

As to the radar guns and the like, we know they are inaccurate but they don't accept that in court.

All the best

Don't forget, this is Scotland where their medieval legal system will quite happily send all the speeders to jail if the sheriff doesn't like their face.

Probably they'll fix it so only people who voted 'no' get sent there though, ensuring victory in the next referendum.

Meanwhile motorcyclists are among the most vigilant on the roads. Just 16% of crashes were because they did not look properly, although it was still the biggest factor alongside "loss of control".
