Shipping a bike

Got a question for you all, got a guy interested in my bike I'm selling.

We have agreed on a cash price we are both happy with, however he wants it delivered.

Now I have a van and I don't mind doing it if there's something in it for me in top. He wants it delivered to Leicester which is a 360 mile round trip for me.

He's getting prices from Shipley etc, does anyone have any idea what he's likely to pay for someone to courier it for him?

It would mean sacrificing a day of my time and approx £70 in fuel, I know this from the last time I did a track day.

What is a reasonable amount to charge?
Do I ask for delivery money upfront and money for the bike or just delivery cash only?

What do u guys think?

why not find a quote on shiply or similar and decide if you're willing to deliver it yourself for that price or slightly lower.

If not, work out the price you're willing to do it for and explain you're not willing to hand the bike over to a stranger with a van due to risk of damage etc and go from there

Just get some quotes yourself and once you have a ball park figure, whack a bit on top.

You probably won't beat shiply if it's a popular route.

I usually try and work this sort of thing in to do other stuff - so if I have a reason to go there or that way anyway - that way the fuel for my own trip is covered.

Otherwise I'd let them see what Shiply does.

I had two cars delivered from Berkshire to West Yorks for less than the fuel for one return trip for me.

Of course, insist on payment for the journey, maybe with a bit more up front and non refundable.

i've used anyvan before, same principle as shiply but i've had much cheaper quotes. actually got a number from one guy i used recently who is v cheap and reliable, if you want it let me know.

Got a cbr600 f3 shipped from Wales to Cambridge for around 100-150? Something like that.
All went fine, they did a good job getting it to me in one piece and all I had to do was pitch up to receive it, they brought the keys, paperwork, V5 etc. Smile

I use shiply and anyvan regularly usually pay £70-100 for delivery from anywhere in the country. not worth doing it yourself at that price.

As stoney said, once you work at costs for yourself to do the job, its usually cheaper to use a courier.

as an example : 190 mile trip each way for me

£100 collected and delivered, fully insured and delivered in 2 days.

If I was desperate to sell the bike, I'd give him a quote he can't resist. If not, Shiply. It probably depends how soon he needs it delivering, if he can hang on a bit the guys on Shiply can fit it in better on a part load basis.

Personally I'd tell him to go hop. He can collect it if he wants it. Why should you faff instead of him? If I was feeling generous (and could combine it with a piss up with someone in the area I don't see very often?) I'd say I'd do it for £170 - £70 for fuel and £100 for my day, and obviously I'd want at least that cash before I left.
360 miles is a long way....

Standard charge for expenses purposes is 45p a mile. Meant to cover fuel plus wear and tear/depreciation of the vehicle. For a 360 mile round trip that works out at £162, so round up to £170 and you're in the same ball park as others have already said.

If you don't think it's worth it to you then there's still the option of letting him sort out shipping through a third party
