Inb4 Teff gets here... (and corrects inaccurate info!)
20 yrs old - CBT, buy and ride a 125 with L plates -repeat every 2 years.
You'll want a bigger bike tho, and might want to skip the 125cc thing altogether...
So motorbike theory test (different to car one) then DAS A2-Licence course (either through a 4 or 5 day course, or book lessons and test with instructor on a bigger bike - and coz of your age you'll be restricted on power until you're 24. you are eligible to do the tests again for an A-Licence, either having held A2 for 2 years, or reaching the age of 24.
Pass both tests, rip up L plates - get restricted bike.
Don't get potato'd and at 24 ride whatever you want.. When eligible, do it all over again for an a-Licence, if you want something with more then 45bhp.
Good luck |
Hi.. having a car licence wont make much odds to getting a motorbike one. In fact being a driver you are likely at a dissadvantage now, when it comes to doing theory/Hazard test, as what 'in the opinion of a panel of judges' they present as a Hazard, you wont.. its something you just 'deal with' without conciouse thought now!
Getting into bikes?
Starting place is to do a Compulsary-Basic-Training course or CBT. costs about £120 or so and they will loan you a bike for the day to do it. Most students can complete the course in a day, but it's not garanteed. so check prices for repeat or further training, and be sure to know what you get for your money.
Complete a CBT course and you get a DL196 certificate, valid for two years, which 'validates' the provisional entitlement for motorcycles on your UK Driving licence.
That 'Provisional' entitlement allows you to ride an A1-licence entitlement, 125/15bhp lightweight motorcycle, unsupervised on the public road, on L-Plates, provided you do not carry passengers or use motorways.. OR to ride a bigger 500+ish cc, A2 or A-Licence entitlement machine, ONLY under the supervision of a DSA approved instructor 'for the purposes of training', subject top age restrictions; (19 for an A2, 24 for an A)
Introduces the three Motorcycle licence entitlement catagories we now have thanks to Brussels.
A1 - 125cc & 15bhp only
A2 - any capacity, no more than 45bhp and if restricted, not restricted by more than half manufacturers original claimed power.. so usually nothing particularly 'sporty'.
a - any capacity any power.
Tests are the same regardless of licence catagory you go for; you need a valid CBT cert, Motorcycle Theory/Hazard test, a mod 1 'off-highway' machine control test, and a Mod 2 'Road-ride' test, to turn a provisional entitlement into a full one. Tests are the same prices regardless of catagory you go for; aprox £30 for theory, £15 for Mod 1, £75 for Mod 2. You just have to have to provide a motorcycle meeting DSA requirements for licence catagory you have applied for.
So you can get an A1 licence turning up on your own 125 you can ride unsupervised before passing tests. For A2 or full A, you have to have a big-bike for tests, that you cant ride, on your own, on the road, before you have pased, unless you are being supervised by an instructor, which begs you doing it through a school who'll provide the bike for you... costs then down to what they charge and how much training you need.
But, as you are under 24, your cant go straight to an unrestricted licence; you can Do CBT and then get your own 125, and maybe have a crack at an A1 licence, or you can do a course to get an A2, but as warned, if you want to ride anything more than 45bhp, you will have to hold your A2 two years, or reach the age of 24, to become eligible to re-do tests for the higher unrestricted A-entitlement.
BUT starting place is to check out Motorcycle Training in your area and book a CBT course... and take it from there. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

welcome to the biking world! don't be put off by what seems like a load of tests to pass, i've said since passing my full bike test it was one of the best things i have ever done!
once you have ridden around on a 125 for a bit the theory and other bits will just fall into place and make sense ____________________ Rides: Yamaha FZR 750 & KMX 200
