Just wondering what the process is for joining the regional area forum section?
My status has shown as 'pending' for weeks (maybe months) now?
PM'd the group moderator but no reply.
Do I need to go through some kind of initiation?

Well you're not exactly missing anything.
The North section is pretty dead these days. I revived it several times between 2005 and 2009. I then vanished for nearly 4 years. I half heartedly attempted a resurrection in 2014 but found little enthusiasm for it.
If you have a motorway capable bike I'm going North to hunt some of the old crew this weekend.

That was the impression I got tbh, just wanted to see out of interest though. 
Only motorway capable in a cage at the moment unfortunately otherwise that would have been cool
