So I have my Module 2 in a couple of weeks and it got me thinking about the eyesight test. I've only ever been advised to wear glasses while riding both on my CBT and when I had an eye test but never that it was compulsory. I passed the basic eye sight test on the CBT with and without glasses and have been riding for several months without glasses at all times of the day in all weathers and never had any issues, well, until last week, or a few days ago.

Basically got half way home on a usual commute and vision went all potato, blurry potato. As a result, today, my next commute I experimented riding with my glasses and found it to be of use, making things in the distance sharper etc etc, took me a while to get over how funny I probably look with a basic pair of harry potter glasses that are years old but safety over fashion statements.

Anyhow my question.. as I feel I can ride or have been riding and undergone DAS training and passed Module 1 without even a hint of glasses being mentioned and never having any trouble would I be able to pass the eyesight test without glasses and then use them on the actual riding part of the test without the need for a restriction code enforced on my license?

Also, do you get more than one attempt at the eyesight test? I want to try first without just to ensure that I do actually meet the requirements without glasses and if I don't then of course go on to read it with my glasses but if you only get one go then I'd rather know ahead of time as not to waste the moneys.

Why don't you just try doing the eyesight test with and without the glasses in daylight tomorrow. It's only reading a number plate unless it's changed since my day?

Still the same, 20 / 20.5 meters depending on the date of the plate made (or something similar.. I think).

I will get the instructor to dummy test me on my next day of training but just wanted to ask ahead of time to get an idea.

The test is only 30-40 minutes, just stick your glasses on if you're in doubt? You're under no obligation to ever do it again, they don't record it if that's your concern.

Oh. So if the eyesight test was completed with glasses then they don't enforce the 01 code whereby you have to constantly wear glasses?

01 becomes a part of your license if you ever have a medical in relation to your license - applying for vocational license etc.

Optometrists seem to know fuck all about the DVSA expectations for eyesight requirements. I think the Welsh like to keep it a secret.

I wore glasses as a kid and then didn't bother when style took over in my teens. Passed my eyesight test for my car license and all was rosy.

Jump forward 12 years and I apply for bus entitlement, leading to a full eyesight test. My license came back with 01 for all categories. My prescription is identical to when I was 15.

I'm of the opinion that a medical (rather than self declaration) should take place at first application for a provisional. I know people who have been diagnosed with all sorts of conditions during license applications and renewals.

Why on earth would you want to chance your luck on the roads by looking cool and not correcting your eyesight (sensible fashionistas use something called contact lenses) and then ending up potato because you thought that blurry thing in your vision was a piece of fluff and not a three ton car. Tut Tut

I asked about contact lenses in the past and my eye sight test results are either so rare or so hard that there's less than a handful of manufactures that make lenses possible for my type of correction needed therefore glasses is the only option in my case.

I have a brightly coloured helmet with a GoPro on the side I don't care about "looking cool" and as in my OP I found them of use.

FYI I'm not chancing my luck and if I thought my eyesight so bad that wearing glasses all the time was needed I would I am in no way intending to put another road user at risk because I didn't want to put some spectacles inside my helmet again as in my OP safety of fashion statement.

Also I'm not chancing my luck because my glasses are to fix a small correction in things in the distance, a very small correct hence why they're only ever advised. If we all undergo the same test of reading a number plate from 20m on the test or on the CBT and I can pass without glasses the same as you did what makes us any different? .. after all that's the only "official test" a road user ever undergoes including when pulled over by a policeman.

Also the blurry potato vision was a result of being forced to stare at a till point screen for hours on end without a brake, combined with tiredness lack of food and water obviously my concentration took a knock.

Also my question here was to ask if reading the number-plate on the Module 2 with glasses meant you had to wear them all the time and that's been answered as no so is all fine. I trust myself enough to make a conscious decision about when and when I do not feel I need that small bit of aid.

I'm sorry, your question may have been answered but it was you that posted the above statement. If it was your local barman doing the advising then I'd be inclined to ignore him but if it was a bona fide optician then it is quite likely that there is good reason they 'advised' you.
My optician did nothing more than advise me to specs when I started driving and when I started I could read a plate at the specified distance, nowadays with corrected vision I can read a plate at least twice the specified minimum but I'd be hard pushed to read it from 10 feet without.

It was also you that posted about getting blurry vision and I had assumed that it was related to genuine eyesight issues not 15 pints of lager (for example).

The bottom line is that the number plate test is a minimum standard, with corrected or perfect eyesight you should be able to read a plate at distances far beyond the minimum stipulated. It may be well to bear in mind that the roads are a dangerous place and that bikers are amongst the group of users who need all the help they can get to avoid getting damaged by other peoples fuckwittery.

Why anybody would want to pass the eyetest and than to use glasses on actual riding?

If you need glasses when riding than use them for the eyetest too.

It is not about restriction code it is about the fact that if you have any issue you must by law declare it.

Doing magic with your eyetest to avoid some imaginery code issues is the sure way for disaster later. Like some claims against you and making your insurance policy invalid.

If you need glasses to ride wear them all the time including on your eyetest.

I wear glasses and not wearing them for "fashion" purposes has made the condition worst. Friendly piece of advice - do not use contact lenses. Even the best ones can give you nasty eye issues.

IMHO wearing glasses on a bike is an advantage. Because I have glasses that are Photosensitive - means they get darker when very strong sun, polarised - means filter 100% all glare and light that is dazzling you and finally are scratch resistant. All in all better than any visor. And in the summer I can ride with open visor and my eyes are still protected from the bugs.

So actually glasses are advantage for riding Very Happy

At the time of writing I wasn't aware if wearing the glasses for the eyesight test meant that the restriction code whereby you would constantly have to wear them would be enforced of course which has been cleared up.

My personal reason is that if the above was the case (which it wasn't) I wanted to prove that my eyesight was good enough to meet the requirement without and then chose if to or not wear glasses during the ride.

Nothing more than short sighted (a very small correction) for me so all is well and good.

I'm still discovering if I do or don't, after my vision went blurry potato during the ride last week I've only gone out once and wore them all the time, took a little time to adapt to having them on but enjoyed the increase in ability to recognize fine details in the distance more (as for me personally the glasses are a small correction on things in the distance.. as I recall).

I enjoyed the slightly increased vision with them on anyway so shall continue to use them.

I think I'm glad there's a lack of options for contacts in my case, the idea of stabbing at my eyes isn't appealing not natural IMO.

I have no idea what mine contain but my main concern was fogging up but it seems my K3 SV has good vents as even with the visor closed and breathing heavily didn't cause a spot of fogging up Very Happy

I noticed the lack of sun effect also, although have a internal sun visor for that.

I've got 01 on my licence, my sight at 14 was that I'd need to wear them if my eye sight didn't improve. I have once set off, got out onto the road and thought "fuck, can't read that" when seeing the plate of the car in front of me, parked up and run back to get my glasses off the garden table where I'd put them while putting my helmet on!

I think the only reason the code is on my license is I ticked a box saying I needed glasses.
