yeah my carb, isnt too bad now, a couple of gaskets and ill be away,
ive found some one who does a rebuild kit for vm carbs, so i might get a new set of jets, and possibly float needles,

actually managed to find 2 sets of shoes which was a bit of a fluke,
but i reckon old cb72 (250) shoes look like a match any way, i might buy a set just for shits and giggles.


most parts have been ordered, it pretty great expense out of the states
the mrs even noticed the drop in the bank account, which she doesnt normally notice. bugger. but she just got a new car so i didnt really get in trouble Wink just a stern look Very Happy

ive decided im going to have to rebuild the alternator, after finding out the price on a replacement item, (more than the price i paid for the bike) ive managed to get the cam that opens the points, so i'll have to free the old ones off, and replace the bearings,

barrels were sent off to https://www.poetonaptec.co.uk/ to get ceramic plated.

here is the left hand barrel, it had the rings stuck to the bore,
and required a stupid amount of effort to free them from the piston.

you can see the chrome chipping off at the top, and faintly see the mark just above the transfer?? port where the rings were stuck

next up is the right hand cylinder, which is actually in pretty good shape, and if the left had been like this i wouldnt have sent them off to get ceramic plated.

most people say a week turnaround on the barrels,
or pay extra for 4 day turn around, with in a month is fine for me,
i doubt i'll be needing them before then.


the windings on the alternator are fine,
its the bearings have welded them self to the shaft, and the cam lobe at one end is also stuck in place, if worse comes to worst. i guess i could cut the bearings off, im not having much luck shifting the fuckers so far

right been a while.
lots of waiting when parts have to come from the other side of the world,

any way first to arrive was my new shift drum and selector dogs.
i had to buy a whole set to get one dog. but thats the way it goes

My KMX200 cylinder was gone for over 3weeks, so maybe that's just normal and what with the usual business and race team stuff they probably look after first?

It's great to see the new pistons arrive and all the new Bridgestone gaskets and parts, that I still find remarkable that they even exist so long after the company closed down.

I bet no-one has ever had to re-build a Bridgestone engine twice though!

Bog-All-Inspiration, but one of those 'thoughts' that come to you when contemplating which way round the toilet-roll should be...

Wasn't it Bridgestone that had reverseable gear selector-shafts and brackets for the brake pedal on both sides, so that owner's cold choose whether to have 'British' RHD controls or 'Euro' LHD controls, just by swapping the brake and gear-levers over and turning them upside down?

And if so... does your bike have that feature, and which way be it configured?

Follow-on ponder.. 'cos I obviously IS full of shit.... The Bridgestone cease of production; Some sources said that the other Japanese bike builders, put pressure on them to cease manufacture or they wouldn't buy their tyres; another suggested that the company wound up production, as it was not 'core-business' and they needed the factory space to expand tyre production; Ponder was that likely has more merit, and a book I was recently reading on the Racing Cobras, Carrol-Shelby's hot-rod Cripple-Carriage; Shelby gave much praise to Bridgestone tyres, as he was developing the Cobra and the Ford GT40; independent of the big American & Euro tyre-co's they were apparently very aggressive getting into the car-tyre business in the US, and supporting racing to get their technology on a par. That would have been the late 60's & co-incidental to the demise of the bikes; supports another suggestion I read somewhere, that claimed that the styling of late 60's suzuki's wasn't ere co-incidence, as Brigestone sold a lot of their tooling to them....

so thats where i stand now,
i pretty much have everything i need now to finish the engine,
just a couple of carb kits, and a couple of bearings for the generator to fit,

and a few days she should be back together, time permitting


mike it was only the 350 that had the dual control thing, all other models have standard controls, although the 175 and 200 models have cool town and country gearing, where you can have a rotary 1-2-3-4-n-1.... gearing, and with the flick of a lever its 1-n-2-3-4-5

as for bridgestone them selves, i like the being forced out by the competition at the peak of their winning story Very Happy

i doubt we'll ever know for sure.


i built the 60cc engine with out outside guidence, it was a mission,
pouring over manufactures books trying to find rings, getting the crank pin holes machined to fit new pins because i could only get a certain size rod to fit the small end with the same legnth as original. haveing to mill down the con rods to fit.
was a mission, but you did it a different way back then, you made shit fit, i doubt there is an original 60s 70s or 80s bike left in new zealand, all of them will have parts adapted from other bikes.

It definitely looks like the cylinders were done to a high standard, and my KMX 200 pot has what feels like a very thick tough plated surface to how it was before, with lovely neat hone marks and chamfered ports like yours.

I know what you mean about indifferent service and poor comms though. I did a load of dodgy home porting on my Cylinder ages ago, (not the reason for the re-plate though), and I used Autosol and polishing mops until the inlet and exhaust ports were really shiny and smooth. I know that does not mean more power or better flow etc, but it looked nice!

When I got the cylinder and head back after 4weeks, I found they'd vapour blasted all inside the ports and took away my shiny finish. Crying or Very sad They also blasted the head after machining and skimming, so I could not see the cutter marks where it had been supposedly skimmed.

On the plus side the transfer ports have been re-worked a lot and the exhaust tidyed up and levelled out. They could not tell me what the new compression ratio should be, or how much was taken from the head though. All they said is that it should go a lot better than std, which I expect will be more than true.

But it's nice for a moderately technically minded person, to receive some explanation and some specs for the work that has been done, instead of just being told it's going to be a quick motor?

Well ya know, dead is dead, and he had a pretty good 90 years, bugger all suffering, so I'm grateful for that,

I'm off in Istanbul this week so no progression on the bike,

Barrels were £130 a piece plus 30 for "welding" and I think tax too,
Pretty expensive, but not blow the budget expensive,

My commuter just got stolen the day before I left, and my ktm a couple of month ago, so I dare say some Bridgestone funds are going to have to be diverted to either buying another bike or bluffing round on the bmw, or the b120, I don't really want to commute through the winter on either bikes,
So I think I'll have to get a really shit bike that no one wants to steal,

3 bikes in 1 year in Edinburgh, fucken mofos fuck me off.

ah ha, well that didnt work out to plan, almost a year since touching the bike.


to be fair, ive had 4 different bikes stolen, done 2 top end rebuilds on my own bikes, done a full rebuild to a tdm 850, and another to a ktm990 (dont ever buy one of them, bastards to work on [Very Happy] )

fitted double glazing to the house, cut down a dozen trees on the property,

helped convert a bus to a motorhome, started a new job, missioned about france and belgium in the campervan,

rebuilt my old 1970s swiss made revox amplifier,

plasterboarded all of the upstairs and painted, re-wired most of the house,


yeah i know, excuses excuses [Very Happy]

anyway house is looking ok, untill a building warrant comes through for the extension down stairs, so i have some time on my hands.



so i was back to bolting the 2 parts of the bottom end back together, but thought id go over it all just in case i missed something a year ago,


just as well as id missed a spring that activates the "highway gear" selector (basically lets it go from 4th back into neural, or allows it to shift into 5th and stops it going into neutral) pretty cool idea,

and also forgot 2 split pins on the selector forks, that keep the pins in place and keep it located on the selector drum,

of course like a retard, i didnt have a single split pin any where, so that made short work of my evenings work on the bike,

after fitting the spring and split pins, refitted all the bits and bobs, you know cogs and all that manly shit

then got the 2 halves of the crankcase together,

pretty painless,

then went about popping the right side rotary valve and cover,

and what no in prep of the clutch going on,


made a very advanced clutch plate soaking device,

made fully from recycled materials, im upto date and very green in my ways.

i give you mince tray clutch plate soaker

the name could do with some work, but you must admit its very effective.

put the clutch together, lined up the crank sprocket,

was quite pleased with myself until i noticed another gear....

wont go on unless i remove the clutch and what not,

of course i can't undo the clutch because it just spins, and i dare not use the 4mm clutch bolts to make a holder in case i brake something,

What stops that idler going on? Looks like you could just turn the basket to clear the clutch plate fingers. Also, it looks like that gear has some timing dots on it - does it drive a balance shaft?

only thing that stopped it going on was the angle of the cut gears.

yeah it has dots,
the crank has one that matches up to 1 on the clutch,
the clutch has another that matches to the idler,
the idler gear has another that matches up to the generator, (which is where all the timing is done, points etc are in the back of the generator)

ive got to rebuild the generator today,
before i can continue bolting stuff on the right hand side

i have to wait on 2 bearings and a seal turning up so i can finish the generator,

also went to fit the new points and condensers, fucken points were the worng size, but i managed to fit the new condensers,

and cleaned up the old points which turned out pretty good any way.

the generator is going to be the bit that holds me up, along with random carb parts that are coming out of the states.

plenty of other shit to be doing i suppose,

right,

i managed to get the generator rebuilt,

im pretty fucked off though, the parts i ordered for it,

new cam, points etc were all for the older model which had a big gear which spun at half the speed.

so the cam needed to have 2 lobes on it, where on my model they put in an idler gear and a small main ger to get it to do a single rotation for every rotation the engine did,

i ordered the right parts but the wrong parts turned up, this was a year ago, so didnt notice till now,

so i got it in place and spent a supid amount of time getting it timed up, mainly because i cant tell my left from my right, and was timing the wrong cylinder

then i went about rebuilding the carbs, setting the floats etc cleaning everything again,

and fitted them

so thats it for now, engine is now fully rebuilt and ready to fit back in the frame,

but first ill degrease the frame from its 38 year old grease and muck,

change the fork oil and probably seals

change the front and rear shoes, and check all the bearings etc, and order a new chain for it as well,

the end is neigh

The cam lobe will probably be fine if you dress it with fine emery, and oil the felt wiper.

yeah it is fine, it opens and closes when its supposed to,
just annoying as i wanted to put a new one in,
not to worry, i might track down the proper one at some point.
