put new shoes in both drums,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0343%20Large_zpsrltg9zna.jpg

changed the fork oil and seals

got the bike back on its wheels again and fitted the engine
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0354%20Large_zpspuggmlbh.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0355%20Large_zpshpn5fa3i.jpg

ran the cables, and connected carbs up
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0356%20Large_zpsj1vwkk17.jpg

connected all the electrics back up,
best bike ever for wiring, see a wire, connect it to another wire of the same colour, and repeat, was so easy, no stupid indicators,, and a cool old school rectifier,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0358%20Large_zpsi6rve4jw.jpg
plus the coolest brake switch ive ever seen Very Happy
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0357%20Large_zpsgdzyzpnd.jpg

then chuck the tank and seat on,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0360%20Large_zpshcpqrx4h.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0361%20Large_zps4wk52r5p.jpg

then connected the exhausts,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0362%20Large_zpsbf3rpn1f.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0363%20Large_zpsvj4zjk1t.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0364%20Large_zpss7zg15ri.jpg
and kick starter and gear shift,

so thats where i stand,

ive got to get a few bits before i can attempt to kick the old girl over,

fuel hose,
fuel tap,
2 stroke oil,
engine oil,
battery acid and then charge the battery,

at some stage i will need to get.

new tyres,
new throttle cable,
throttle grips,
new tank pads (missing from original parts order)
kick start rubber,
gear change rubber,
foot peg rubber

not much happening, as im waiting for parts, (and an email back from richard Wink )

so i decided to see if i could clean out the rusty tank internals
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0368%20Large_zpsqr087wcm.jpg

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0367%20Large_zpsaezfizav.jpg

i looked on youtube, and the consensus was vinegar if you didnt mind waiting, or Muratic Acid (swimming pool cleaner/ Spirit of Salts / brick cleaner)

since my local hareware shop was closed i decided to just get some vinegar and see how it goes,

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0376%20Large_zps4k8i0mud.jpg

also decided to chuck on the chain,
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0378%20Large_zpsvqcycc98.jpg

and sprocket cover, and highway gear selector

https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/DSC_0379%20Large_zpsauhzhtky.jpg

hopefully my new fuel tap will arrive tomorrow which is actually a kz900 unit, whilst not identical to the original, its close enough Very Happy

Looks great, makes me want to get an old bike! I'm a bit confused though, is this in NZ or Scotland your managing to source these parts now?

im from new zealand, but live just south of edinburgh in scotland,
Very Happy
most of the parts i source out of the states, just about every part for a bridgestone is available new, (at a cost)
which i cant say for a lot of other jap 2 strokes.

well the vinegar worked ok, but not aggressive enough,
but this is the clour of the crud that came out
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0380%20Large_zpskcqqpygu.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0382%20Large_zpsxsxsrx1k.jpg

so i bit the bullet and got some "deck and patio cleaner" (hydrochloric /Muriatic acid)
it was 20% some of the pool stuff is around 36%
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0384%20Large_zpsklb3jqoz.jpg

worked great, did a better job in a hour than what vinegar did in 2 days
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0386%20Large_zpsitialnth.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0391%20Large_zpsqmmhhroc.jpg

so in celebration of having a clean tank, i jerry rigged the fuel lines and attempted to start the old girl!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq9sO5Cb6-g&
half a dozen kicks and she fired to life.

great success Very Happy

well in other news, some little retard broken into my garage and stole my bandit 600 commuter,

thankfully they left my bmw, suzuki b120 and bridgestone alone,

still an arse, so this months pay has been diverted away from bridgestone matters into a new commuter.

not exactly what i was after to use as a winter hack in scotland,

but the price was too good to pass up.

Sweet, I'm considering moving the other way (London to NZ/OZ) and was wondering how you got the parts so easily having live in NZ before.

Having had to do my little Fiats' tank that's come up pretty well but would consider lining it myself.

right ive kind of been slack,

but, ive got most of the bits now to finish this,

i put new tyres and tubes on, the rubber knee guards are fitted,

had to fluff around with the timing quite a bit, i was miles out in the end, ive got it as close as i can with out a timing light,

but it now seems to start first kick and doesnt piss petrol all over the place now,

still to take it out for a run,

but heres a cold start up video

It sounds real nice does that! Thumbs Up
Very crisp, can't wait to see it on the road!

Oh and I'd shake the hand of whoever stole the bandit, as making you have to get a VTR 1000 is win win, and I see you have cans for the devil's own music! Wink

Lol. The worst thing is, 2 days after I bought the vtr was bought.
The bandit turned up undamaged apart from the locks, which I replaced for £30 Very Happy so I have a spare 20k mile vtr 1000 going spare if some one wants to put an offer in.

I promise to only spend the money on drink and potentially another 2 stroke project Wink

well something isnt quite right in the force,

starts first kick, idles fine,
but its seriously down on power, like id say 5 or 6hp not the advertised 20hp.
i thought i'd change out the carbs as i couldnt get one of them to stop pissing fuel
so got some genuine mikuni vm18-144 going from the stock vm17-18
they are pretty much the same.
i tried the stock 95 mains with 15 pilot = no better
tryed the 70 mains with 30 pilot that came in the carbs (another bridgestone rider skiri251 has had success with setup)

its certainly better than the 95 mains set up but topped out at 45 mph and couldn't even hold speed in top gear

ive had problems with some aftermarket exhaust gaskets sealing... mainly because the pieces of crap melted
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0643%20Large_zpsmsswge5t.jpg
yep quality
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0644%20Large_zpsdkz6txji.jpg

so i got a set of genuine old stock bridgestone ones to try out
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0645%20Large_zpsgni4mghg.jpg

so thats where i am.

compression is bang on, spark is good, fuelling is where it should be.. may be. Very Happy
timing is as close as i can humanly get it.

ill post ..post ride with the new gasket rubbers Very Happy

i dunno though, my little kawasaki kh125 rotary valve
would eat this for breakfast at this stage. even my little piston port suzuki b120 is quicker.

Yeah i'd expect 70-80mph out of one of these. Something is amiss. Disc valves in right place? Silencers clean? You know the score, just need to work through it methodically.

yeah i know, i rebuilt a bridgestone 60cc. it was faster than this.
i cant think what it could be, apart from the exhaust leaks. but even then i doubt you'd lose that much power.

im 99.9% sure its not the disc valves, they were like new, and put back in the right spot, i think if i was even a tooth out on them it wouldn't start properly.
it literally starts first kick, i can start it with my hand.

grrr, mother fucking bikes Very Happy

nice bike sounds good. is there a lever above the gear lever were you shift one way you get 5 gears shift the lever the other way then you get 4 gears. I think its called dual transmission a sports shift lever. Thats if your bike is fitted with the sports shift lever. how many gears as your bike got. just thought that maybe why its slow. they should do about 75/80ish

yeah its got the town and highway gears,
no point puting it in town and only having the 4 speed,
maybe if you were used to riding an old honda c90 and were used to going from 4th straight to neutral. but id rather have the extra gear.

its literally an extra gear, the lever doesnt change the whole gear box's ratios.
nice thought, but nope Very Happy
it should easily do 80mph

i gave it a quick start straight after work,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RWztB9T42c&

it sounds and revs crisper with the new rubber gaskets,

ill take it for a ride after ive had a coffee and a smoke.

ok partial success,

its running loads better managed to get to 70 before one of the baffles came flying out Very Happy and i stopped to turn around to pick it up,
the other baffle in the exhaust is broken off inside the exhaust and only half of it is able to come out,
not really a problem for now, but will become one when it gets coked up with carbon and i cant remove it. Sad
GT200Fan79 you know you want to sell me your spare
expansion chambers. i will even send you my limited release 10.2% imperial oyster stout as well as cash Wink

its still a bit shit down low getting off the mark.
unsure if this is a carburation issue of if its the characteristic of the bike.

ill post a video riding it once i figure out how to hold my phone and ride at the same time

i decided id change back to the original carbs for a test.
the new carbs had a piss poor bottom end, but a really good top end,

so i chuck on the carbs, starts first kick as always,
take off and the bottom end feels great, but i get to the top end and it feels pretty crap, couldnt get above 55mph

and way coming back up the hill to my place and a cylinder drops out and starts running on one,

i thought it was the condesor arcing out on the cover (its happened before) but it felt considerably free'r revving,

parked it up and let it cool down before looking at it.

first thing i did was pull the plug, it had crap built up on it..... oh... nooo.....

put my finger on the plug hole and pushed down the kick start.....
noooooooo!!!!! compression = 0 Sad

pulled off the head to be greated with this tale of woe
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0652%20Large_zps9n08aa4v.jpg
luckily in my arsenal of spares i had one piston that was in good shape, with 1 good ring,
exactly what was needed
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0654%20Large_zpslrugyq9n.jpg

so swapped it all over and happy days
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0655%20Large_zpsrvnqtotk.jpg

most importantly my stupidly expensive ceramic coated barrels were still in perfect nick, not even a hint of a scratch (thank Hesus)

heres a couple more pics of the semi destruction
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0656%20Large_zps5xktexso.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0657%20Large_zpshmajbwgj.jpg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/bridgestone%20200/DSC_0659%20Large_zpslhggvk9f.jpg

so one can assume that the main jet on the left cylinder is blocked, and it was just running on the pilot jet the whole time, much leanness = very hot
very hot = burny hole to piston
burny hole to piston = sadness

so therefore much leanness = sadness,
better to be a bit fat Very Happy

Well that's a bit of a kick in the bollocks ain't it, after all the work you did and the motor re-build. Glad you had a spare good piston and rings available though to save the day.

It's gotta be a right bummer finding out you have a blocked jet that's caused the mayhem. But I suppose at least you know why it wasn't as mental to ride and didn't have anything like the expected performance now.

Whats the ignition set up like on these bikes? Is it points or CDI? And also does it fire both plugs together wasted spark style from one coil or a pair? I'd just be really anal about setting the timing and knowing both pots were firing at the same distance btdc for piece of mind.

I hope you have it screaming along at X5 slaughtering speeds soon too!

I ruined a piston on my RD350B purely cause I ignored a leaking base gasket. Felt such a tit after that. "Oh this feels a bit odd - I'll just thrash it more"....

I've often thought about tuning an X5, but it would be diminishing returns, the block is more difficult to tune than two barrels and then you have the stupid clutch design that is impossible to strengthen.

The Bridgestone will always be cooler cause it's a bacon slicer, just like the kawa A1 and A7 are uber cool.

points ftw Very Happy its got a pair of coils so not wasted spark.
ive set the timing as best i can, ive done it about 10 times to be as exact as i can (as exact as you can be with points) the points are mounted on a single plate so they will always spark at exactly opposite times to one another, there isnt a way of having 1 cylinder firing at 15' and the other at 12'.
you rotate the whole generator to change the timing and it changes it for both

yeah, id be tempted to tune this or any 2 stroke, but with them getting rarer by the year, and the spares getting harder to get (although the bridgestone is easy to get spares for) its expensive, and my daily shitter is way faster, so i think id rather have a reliable 2 stroke Very Happy (oxymoron? )

i do like rotary valve bikes, ive had a kh125, a suzuki tc100, a couple of suzuki a100's, and a yamaha yl2, also to a different degree a vespa 150 super which has a cut out on the crank rather than a disc.

the best made i think have always been the kawasakis, but if bridgestone didnt get run out of the race may be we'd have a few more good ones
