Hi guys,

I was wondering what your opinion is on selling my bike/s. I currently have a ybr125, zzr 600, ZX9R and a Clio.

The thing is, I'm currently living with my parents at 25, and while I have a decent job at the moment, I feel like I probably don't deserve to have a fun bike while I'm living under their roof. My parents don't have an issue with me having the bikes and I pay digs, but I guess I feel like I shouldn't have them any more.

The YBR125 can be justified as cheap transport and as a backup if there's a problem with my car, so for the time being, it will be getting kept.

The ZZR600 is getting on a bit, and I don't really use it and doubt I'd have the time to maintain it if I did.

The 9R has just recently been stripped to bits by myself, and I got various parts painted etc. It's in good condition, but again, I don't feel I've used it enough since I put it back together, and I'm struggling to justify keeping it. At the same time though, I will take it out and feel like keeping it. It's proabably worth about £1800 with the ohlins suspension possibly sold seperately.

The YBR and ZZR are probably worth £1200 total.

I will be taking a reasonable wage drop in october, as I'll be going back to being a student. I could keep these bikes going, but I know I'd struggle mainly with time. I do everything myself to maintain the bikes (tyre fitting, valve clearances etc), but there comes a point where I consider whether I want to be doing that stuff on my only day off.

What do you guys think? The ZX9R is a good bike, and tbh I doubt I'll get a bike that's cheaper with similar performance, so may be worth for the time being. I'm kinda undecided. I also worry that when I do sell up, I then won't be able to justify getting another sportsbike further down the line (I got the 9R when it was transport & pleasure, rather than just a toy).

I'd appreciate to hear what you think, although I do realise you're a biased audience. Laughing

Thanks guys. Thumbs Up

Is there a good public transport which you could take to get to your workplace and forth? If so, sell everything but the ZXR.
That's what I do, I use the public transport to get to places around the town and I keep my ZXR just for the me fun time. Thumbs Up

If there's no public transport, or you feel like it's beneath you, keep the Clio or YBR for commuting and the ZXR. You must know what's cheaper to keep. I don't know how much the insurance, MOT and the road tax is. Using the ZXR for commuting would be a waste of its potentional + keeping it alive would cost a considerable amount of money. Smile

EDIT: If I understand this correctly, you do not need quick cash, you just want to reduce the expenses. Find the cheapest way to commute and keep the ZXR for the fun time at the weekends. It's not that expensive to keep a ZXR, when you ride it just for fun. One shall have something that brings him joy.

I've downsized myself but that's more to do with lack of time, job, house, mrs & kid = way less free time Laughing

I have the time to maintain the two cars, one bike, maybe two and def not three.

The car is always handy to have especially with our weather. As you say the 125 is a good cheap back up and with the tax etc being so low doesn't make you feel bad having it there.

I ended up Sorning 2 out of 3 bikes for a year n a half. Then I bought a Royal Enfield (and sold the bmw). She will never see me again Embarassed

Needs must, but if you don't want to get rid of the zr9, just sorn it and forget about it till after uni as otherwise you could sell it and end up spunking the money on booze and hookers Razz

I'm in a similar position. I'm 19 I've got a little 1L car, DRZ400 and also a YBR125. I've got my savings that I have as a fall back. However I'm soon to be moving into a 3 bed house by myself that my parents have bought and I'll be paying the mortgage (on an apprenticeship salary of 16k p/y). So I'm also looking at downsizing.

<sensible mode> As a student it depends how sensible you are with your mullah, personally though, I don't think I could justify having three bikes and a car as a student. I'd probably get rid of the car and only keep one fun bike or at least downsize to to one bike and a car and see how you do financially <sensible mode>

Also, I doubt public transport actually works out cheaper than running a 125 if you use it regularly.

Unless you're emotionally attached to the ZZR, I'd get rid - one less mouth to feed. Keep the car for shitty winter/need to carry stuff, the YBR for "I only have 3p for fuel this week", and the ZX just coz.

Personally having moved out of home young and never had the chance to save money, I'd advise cutting right down and saving everything you can, I'm in a position now where at the same age of you I don't expect I'll be able to buy a house this side of 40 realistically speaking.

My friends who lived at home until recently, or still live at home, are all far better off than I am, just because their outgoings are that much lower so they've been able to save more.

Running three bikes and a car is using the extra money you have just for the sake of it. I'd keep one bike just because bike, the rest of the money would go in a pot marked mortgage. Boring maybe, But MOT, tax and insurance money is all money down the drain.

As someone that had a fast-ish car and bikes when I lived at home, and then moved out quite young, I wish I'd saved more when I had the chance. I'm pretty much living hand to mouth at the moment and it sucks!

Sell them, invest/save teh monies. I'd say keep the car, 125 and ZX9R. I don't see what the ZZR offers you. 9R for brain out hooning (sell that if brain out hooning isn't your thing), 125 for cheapness.

Tis true that all my friends around my age (24) have nicer vehicles than me, but then, they've all got the credit debt to go with them and all of them rent/live at home.

I saved like mad for over a year, got hitched and bought a house (3 bedroom semi detached, big driveway, nice area). The inside was untouched from 1985 and hadn't been lived in for a decade which probably put a lot of people off.

But then living in NI that house cost £110,000 Laughing

Equally our wages tend to be less, ie a job that pays 18-20k in England pays 14-15k in NI.

I agree with the save now while at home, I managed to save more than half my salary in that year as my bills consisted of petrol, tax & insurance, the odd beer and takeaway.

First off I'd look at whether you need the car. I'm guessing that the Insurance and running cost is highest for the car. If it's just for rainy commutes, can you use public transport?

If you really need the car, then I'd keep it and the Zx9R. The money you save in fuel commuting on the 125 is not going to be more than keeping the other 2 bikes on the road unless you're doing big miles.

I got rid of my car a few years ago and don't miss it at all. There's nothing my car could do that my current (1) bike and a large top box cannot.

You also don't mention how far your commute is. Depending on that, what about public transport or push bike for your back-up? Sell the car, ZZr and YBR, save the monies. Also wouldn't it be nice to keep the ZX9R as you've put time and money into it?

Serious on saving money? Keep the YBR and flog the rest.

Just reducing outlay, keep YBR and ZX.

Other sensible way, keep clio, flog all bikes. Sad

Minimum, sell the ZZR

I only have a car because the missus drives to work. I would keep the 9r and the YBR. The YBR for all the commuting and tooing and froing. The 9r as the polish up queen. The YBR running costs, insurance will be peanuts anyway. And with a few years NCB, the 9r insurance won't be huge and if you sorn it over the winter or some such a saving could be made?

Sounds more like you can't justify the multiple vehicles due to lack of use more than the fact you're still renting from your parents (you're paying board so you're not sponging)

I'd not sell everything instantly but decide which one you're least fussed about parting with (ZZR perhaps if it's running and an easy sell) give it a clean and polish and see if it sells and re-assess things in a few months.

Still not used the ZX9R ?
perhaps it's time for that to go to someone who'll use it and you can buy again later or see what things are like as a student in terms of transport, if you find you're not needing / wanting the YBR

bit by bit, give it time and reassess each vehicle independently.

I'd keep the YBR, it's the hardest one to replace for a reasonable price. Also it's 125 and everybody wants one, so when you do come to sell there should be a lot more buyers knocking on the door than there would be for an old ZZR6 or ZX9R.

I'd also ditch the Clio if you can use public transport most of the time and afford not to have to drive places/carry loads of heavy gear etc.

That way when you get your own place sorted you can come back to bigger bikes as your finances start to recover a touch.

There'd be FA point in keeping the 9R just to have it sorned, and if you need to save running costs, then tyres, chain&sprockets and servicing as well as feeding it Unleaded will all hurt you more than on the YBR.
