Hi everyone,
My name is Julien and i'm 18 and new to mopeds. I just bought a TaoTao Thunder 50cc because of the ridiculous cost of insurance in the state of Florida. Since i'm new to scooters and what-not i have gone through YouTube and other sites for guidance, unfortunately, nothing has seemed to help.

I'm looking for help in regards to What-to-do when i first open my crate, should i trust this Chinese scooter, should i change any parts as soon as i can to save me trouble later, etc.

I just need to know the basics, any help is MUCH appreciated!

Thank you for your time and help (hopefully)!

(Edit: I forgot to ask, i have a cover but how reliable are these scooters in the rain? As in i'm not going to be riding it in the rain but what if its parked outside my job and it starts pouring outside...i live in Florida after all. Thanks again!)

Hi Julien,

I would suggest you wait until your crate arrives, and see if it comes with instructions, or if not, see if you can figure it out yourself.

You might find that it comes with no oil, brake fluid, coolant (if applicable) or battery acid, and you would be wise to check every nut and bolt for tightness - so just check eveything, basically.

There are plenty of hits on Google so I'm sure you will find something useful there.

Several Videos too - take your pick.

A quick google it appears to be a standard Chinese GY6 knock off.

The 40mph top speed American sellers seem to claim will be bullshit (unless you believe optimistic speedos). 35mph on a good day.

Not sure if it will be restricted as mopeds are for the European market.

Throw an 80cc big bore kit on it that'll get you a touch over a genuine 40mph and improve acceleration a lot. There is a good yank site for GY6 stuff here https://www.scrappydogscooters.com/ they stock pretty much anything you could ever want.

+1 for that!

If it already has oil in, drain it and use the best quality (that is suitable for the machine) that you can afford, and don't skimp on the oil changes - every 500 miles for the first 2,000 miles.

On the subject of rain covers - my main thought is what are you going to do when you need to remove it for riding, and it's still raining? Have you got some way of storing it wet?

Pity you didn't find BCF before purchasing. The only reason we have 50cc mopeds in the UK is that's all sixteen year olds can ride. If you can possibly ride anything bigger you should. A 125 will do about sixty miles per hour and a hundred miles per gallon. A much more practical and safer vehicle.

Anyway, Chinese tyres vary from awful to lethal, so change them for anything NOT made in China.
Check absolutely everything, worker earning less than a (US) Dollar an hour aren't going to be too meticulous about their work.
