Hi All,

I am looking to buy a top box for my r6.

I have always been against it as it makes a sport bike looking like a delivery bike but after having to take my back pack everywhere with me, I am fed up with this and want to simply to put everything in the top box.

what brand will you go for and how many liters?

do you think it will attract attention and hence theft ?

I am thinking of putting my rain suit, air pump and lunch box plus helmet in there plus few other bits
how much is reasonable for a box and mount ?

Buy a used rear seat on ebay, bolt top box to it.

The seat bolted to the box sounds like an idea

Is that safe ? I have a seat and can just drill through it and put the mount on

Or is there a big backpack that i could also put my locks and everything else in there without worrying about what will happen if i come off the bike? I don't want a hole in my back by the disc lock

Top box bolted to the seat works fine, here's mine:

The only problem with this is it makes getting on and off the bike a bit undignified as you can no longer swing a leg over, so you have to thread your leg through the gap above the rider's seat. I also got this wrong once and kicked the bike over Embarassed

The seat base is only plastic so the box wobbles about quite a bit (so I'm told) but it's more than secure enough, I have taken it to Germany full of oil and gear and it never gave any trouble. Better than soft luggage as it's lockable too, and you can leave your helmet in it. I went this way after buying a Renntec rack with the box on, the rack was awful but I still wanted to use the box. This is a much better way.

Thanks looking at the picture i guess the way it is done is,

Bolt the square base to the seat and then base to topbox rather than 1 bolt from topbox to seat right?

I used three bolts between top box mounting plate and the seat because the seat was a very awkward shape. The more you can use, the better. I also used a lot of spacers and washers to get it to sit proud above the foam, of course I removed the foam where the bolts/spacers/washers are but I didn't want to strip the seat to bare plastic base as that would look horrible. But then you can't have the mounting plate floating on top of foam, it just doesn't stay flat enough.

I haven't bolted the box to the mounting plate, it is kept on just with the original clipping system. Thankfully it's a metal plate and the whole thing is quite strong, though there is no name on it so couldn't tell you who made it. I've seen a few about though, so they can't be too extravagantly priced.

Are the only possibilities backpack or topbox? What about a nice little Renntec rack? Or Ventura? Or even a tailpack?

That said, I run with a topbox on my Thundercat because I realised that most times I ride it I take stuff with me - clothes/laptop to work, clothes and stuff on weekend tours etc so why not have a decent bit of luggage rather than faff with bungees and soft stuff? I picked up a Nonfango rack and topbox for a song via an enthusiasts' forum.

Did you consider something like a Kriega US20/30 tailpack?

i just bought a rentec luggage rack and cheapo 30L ebay top box for the exact same reason of not having to cart everything in a backpack, and i can put my helmet in it! admittedly it does look odd but its so handy.

**edit** paid 26 quid for the topbox and about 90 quid for the rack

Have you thought of getting a tail bag and strapping it to the seat.

I don't care if it doesn't make the bike look cool it makes using the bike far more practical.
