I mostly use a damp micro-fibre cloth because the paintwork is treated with nano-wax polish, and not much sticks to it.

I usually use paraffin and an old paint brush to clean the chain, followed by a good lube with chain grease (less flick-off onto wheel rim) when dry.

Don't forget to clean around the front sprocket area and chain slider - lots of muck can collect there.

Amazing stuff and can be purchased for cheaps Thumbs Up

Fairy liquid wont work very well, whereas with some paraffin on and old rag will clean it up effortlessly.
Once clean just relube the chain.
I personally only lightly lube the chain after a clean, then giving it a proper coat once I return from a long ride so the chain is nice and warm.

Is abrasive.

Use car shampoo, that's what it's for.

Paraffin for the chain. Diesel is also recommended.

I'm a bit OCD when it comes to cleaning so my cleaning kit consists of:

Halfords micro fibre wash mitt, has 2 sides one for general cleaning and another for the really stuck on stuff.

Halfords drying towel - helps get rid of the little marks when the bike dries naturally.

Autoglym bodywork shampoo and conditioner - excellent stuff and leaves a coating on the bike to help assist with future cleaning.

Auto glym high resin polish, leaves it looking extra sparkly - i have 2 micorfibre cloths one for applying and one for buffing off.

For the chain i use paraffin with an old toothbrush and cloth and then lube up with a decent chain lube. Very Happy

I wouldn't use fairy liquid personally, however a cheaper alternative to autoglym was tescos own car wash and wax, cheap and did a good job.

Whilst i agree with you the salt levels are ridiculously low and as long as you washed it all off with a hose after your done cleaning then a quick ride in winter will do more harm then washing up liquid.

However i would never use it to clean my bike especially when other specific shampoos are so cheap.

As it has been said dishwahser liquid is abrasive and also contains a lot of salt. Not good. The muc-off or any other chain cleaner is fine.

Buy some cheap car wash and wax stuff it costs few pounds like this one:
