How much force is required to blow a seal.

My Ducati left side seal blew after either coming down from a wheelie or being used after sitting for a few years.

How easy is to to blow seals coming down from a wheelie

I don't want to blow them every time the wheel comes down.

Also is it true replacing seals on USD forks is a pain in the arse?

Stop crashing your wheelies down then and accelerate into them as the front wheel comes down. If you want to do wheelies; accept you'll not get them 100% right 100% of the time and you'll have to replace your wheel bearings, headstock bearings, chain & sprockets and fork seals more often.

Yes it's true replacing the seals is a pain in the arse, but these things are all relative.

A 900SS doesn't seem like the wheelie bike of choice.

Fix the seals and give it some stick when it comes down, just open the throttle more.

Ok good advice, most of those wheelies are tiny, not on purpose and just due to heavy acceleration.

The biggest bike I was on before this was a Bandit 600 Laughing Laughing

Which probably had more power than the 900ss. Wheelies especially small ones don't tend to blow out seals. I've been badly wheeling my TDM for years and never blown out a seal.

From Workshop experience upside down forks blow at least twice as often as conversational forks

No that easy to do either Look at Manuel before starting some need Odd tools and you need a split seal driver or to be VERY carefully with a drift

Believe me the 900ss is faster/easier to wheelie then the bandit.

And about the seals, that's why I mentioned that the bike sat for several years before being ridden, as I suspected that would of contributed to their early failure.

Is it possible to just

remove the fork top bolt
empty old oil
change seals
refill with oil
refit top bolt

Do I need to fully dissemble the fork?

With USD forks, the oil seal is the first to go on, so the last to come off. It also needs to come off the top.

The fork needs to be seperated to do so. You will need tools to hold the damping rod, and you will need a fork compressor too.

It is far, far less hassle. To take the fork off, take it to your local motorcycle repair shop, and ask them to change the seals on it and give them £30

I've ridden both and would put it the other way personally, however my memory is foggy. Can't speak to the wheeling as the 900ss wasn't mine so I didn't try!

Yes, and get some ratchet straps so you can compress everything and fit the top cap.

It took 30st to fully compress my USD zxr400 forks.

Any particular reason? I've had the forks apart on more bikes than I care to remember and I've ALWAYS managed to do it by hand.

Only one set on my EXC 520, went back together no problem. On my GS500 I even screwed it back on with the weight of the bike on it (Pikey Spring/oil change)

I thought you northerners were supposed to be hard grafters? Sound more like puny children Wink
