The cunts at my local council have sent me a new registration form. The time before last, I had ticked a box that opted out of the open register. The next time I did it by phone as there were no changes. However, the council decided there was a change, and was that I had decided I wanted to go back on the open register.

So, I was back on 192.com along with my wife and children, our ages our time at address and how much we paid for our house, all for the world to see, free of charge.

The new registration form has decided I agree to the open register again. I look for the opt out box and there isn't one. I now have to phone the council direct to opt out of the open register. Ok, done.

Thing is, it seems councils have a nice sideline in selling open register to whoever has the money, this will be market research companies ( what they then do is make the details worth more by finding out more specific details about you and selling on - I sucked the scaly teet of market research for 10 years ), 192.com, sales, junk mail, charities etc.

A council has a lot to gain by keeping as many people as it can on open register. Councils rip you off and waste money in a consequence free 'business'.

Might be worth double checking how your details stand before signing 'no changes'.

I'd put an official complaint in to the complaints officer raising the issue of potential damages for changing your registration without authority to do so. I'd also be contacting the ICO about this as it's a clear breach of the DPA.

I think the opt out system is a disgrace, it should be opt in. IMO it flies in the face of the spirit of the Data Protection Act.

Absolutely right. Silence is not acceptance. Felthouse v Bindley and all that jazz!
