I have £4000 in my TSB current account earning 5% interest. £4000 is the maximum I can put in there. I'll be getting a student loan soon so that will take the space in my TSB account, leaving me with £4000 that I'd like to invest. I won't want access to it for at least another 5 years, but more likely 10 or 15 years. What would you do?

I wouldn't have got the loan and used the £4k instead, perhaps get a job of a type when studying too, but I don't know your situation.

If your set on keeping the £4k 'safe', make sure you can get easily and without penalties if you need it in a hurry.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

You'd be better leaving the money in the TSB account at 5% and open another account for your student monies. A Santander 123 current account pays a decent interest rate (3% if you get the balance of £3k up to £20k) and it also has cashback deals.

You won't get better than 5% anywhere, but if £4k is the maximum you can have in the TSB you need another account to invest the £200 pa you get on your £4k and be disciplined enough to not to dip into it so you get compound interest on your interest.

Care to share this "Savings Account" that pays more than 5% interest....

1. You don't really have sufficient funds to start investing (just my opinion)
2. The funds you do have need to be in an easy access ISA, higher interest as possible of course.
3. When you do invest, do it yourself and avoid admin management charges.
4. Google Motley fool
5. Have fun and lots of practice using dummy shares, most decent sites have a dummy account for this.
and alternatives
5. Get a good Binary option Bot (This is my latest R&D project finding one that works using only small funds. It's good fun)
6. Pay to be able to see what trades serious profit making individual gurus are trading on and copy them, they get in long before the 'big guys have shuffled their paperwork.

meh fuck that go to the casino stick it all on black, ensure drunk at the time just in case things go wrong, it eases the pain. Or you could use the more skillful option and play poker with it.

Give it to me I'll pay you 5% Smile

Premium Bonds?
Not guaranteed to gain anything, but ours do win a couple of times a year.
Just the odd £50, here and there.
Easy to withdraw if you need to.

£4000 is not enough money. Why get a student loan and save the £4000? you'd be better off using that money to not have to have a loan and pay the interest which will be greater than any return you'll get on 4 grand.

Unless... You buy an emerging classic bike for £4000 and then hope it increases in value.

Student loans are low interest, 1.5%. He could take the student loan and put it in a savings account and make money.

4k,
It's enough money to start to be serious but not enough to see any real return.

Marjay touched upon what I would do, buy assets that are appreciating. Vintage guitars, art / whatever interests you and is expensive.

If you can find assets that people want to sell in a hurry to free up cash (usually 1k plus) that you can get cheap and can wait to sell often you can buy something that's 1k but worth 1.5k if you wait for the right buyer.

So long as you have the cash accessible you can barter down, get a good deal then sell on when you get chance/to the right buyer.

Risk is minimal as if you get a bargain in the first place then you can always sell at no profit if you have too. Plus you always have an asset to back your outlay.

Wait for the latest legal high trend
Buy £4k of it
Sell it all before someone on your campus dies
Profit

A friend did this with mephedrone and apparently tripled his initial investment.

Not everyone has the belly for high risk / high yield / high potential to destroy lives, but many congratulations to your friend on not killing anyone in this astute three fold glory.

I have turned more than 3 fold on things way more legal! It doesn't have to be anything daft like that.

Choose a subject you enjoy, and explore that.

£4k is enough for a treat, not an investment.

Buy a bike with it.

Err... low interest, but often for a lot longer term than 10 years. You can't easily control how much to pay off of the loan.

I currently have a higher rate interest account and get about 1.4% In order to get higher than that you'll need an ISA or similar.

Personally, I would invest some in an industry-related qualification that would help you get a decent job, once you have finished studenting - like a CCNA or MCSE qualification for IT, or TEFL in education, or whatever is relevant in your chosen career path as a degree doesn't always cut the mustard.

Spend what's left on hookers and beer.

Can you take it all out now and spend it? You might be dead in 10 years. Life is for living in the present not the future.

This attitude is why I have no money (but lots of shiny things).

It's also one of the reasons my wife hates me.

Depends what makes you happy. For me personally I'm not that interested in having lots of shiny stuff so I can quite easily save my money. I tend to make stuff last.

Which is why many of my socks have holes in them Very Happy

Buy a currency that's terribly low at the moment, EUR, CZK, USD etc., wait till they get back up. Thumbs Up

Or buy gold, it's very low at the moment. No one ever lost his money on gold. Thumbs Up
