Hey Guys

I bought an Old school KLR650 2005 model from an old guy who cant ride it any more. So I got it for pretty cheap but it was standing around in his yard for a couple of years.

I absolutely love riding it On and Off road since it was actually kitted for total Off road.
It chows allot of oil apparently and its Fan's fuses seem to have blown so I had to replace that...the FAN did not go on for a long time actually and it became really hot the one day idling in traffic. Not sure if I already hurt it a little bit.

Anyway this morning it was standing in the rain but it had a cover on over most of it.
I could not get it to start. Just sounded like a dead battery even though I did ride it the day before. Usually the bike starts with the electronic starter with no problem or hassle. Press it once and it starts.

Now I need to check the battery and I would like to do that without removing the plastic and seat to get to the battery.
The guy who checked out my KLR when I first got it hooked up a multimeter to it and checked the readings without removing anything.
SOO my question really is WHERE does these clips usually sit on a bike? I know one can just hook up a charger on the also but I cant seem to find them.

Second question is...Could the Fan on such an old bike drain current? Since the circuit is intact again?

Thanks and kind regards

If it has been standing for a couple of years, I would guess the battery is beyond it's useful life. An overnight charge might work for a short time, but after such a long time, it has almost certainly lost a good percentage of it's charge-holding capacity.

If you can't locate a remote access point to the battery, you may have to remove the plastics to get at it this time - but this would be a good idea to do this anyway, as you really need to check the condition and tightness of the terminals, and the battery itself, as it could have dried out or cracked.

If the battery turns out to be serviceable or needs replacing, you could wire in a socket so that you can connect a voltmeter or charger in the future, without having to remove the plastics.

I have a waterproof cigar lighter socket on mine that I can access from under the seat, and can connect just about anything 12 volt to it when I need to.

As for the fan, you will need to check the wiring diagram to see if it is powered through the ignition or not. The fan on mine will continue to run with the ignition off, so if there was a problem with the sensor, it could potentially drain the battery if it came on when it didn't need to.

The fan on my car will continue to run after you turn the ignition off, but there's a timer in the circuit, so it will only run for about 5 minutes at the most. It does this because the engine can start to overheat after you stop, when there's no airflow. Not sure if bikes do this though.

I would get a proper look at the battery and check it terminals are tight !

As it been standing and seems to get hot I consider changing the coolant !
