So the time has come for me to change the rear tyre on the ZX10R.

There are many variations of different ranges available that I'm just baffled at my next choice.

The front of the bike has a Dunlop GP212 Pro on it, which is the tyres that the winning TT bikes used, I want to keep that and just change the rear which was previously a Qualifier 2. Good tyre mid corner, but wheelspun a bit easy in the damp. Looking for something that grips at least as good as the Qualifier 2, heats up at least as good and hopefully will last 3-4k,

If there was some simple chart of mileage vs grip with other stats it would be fine, but all the information seems to be from user reviews which are virtually useless. People saying BT14s heat up faster than Pilot Road 3s which I know to be bollocks and all sorts.

So how do you choose what tyre to go with? Seems harder to me than choosing a bloody bike.

Tyre for the job innit.

I stick to the main manufacturers and with touring tyres there isn't a huge difference between the ones I've used so far although my current PR4s come in 3 different carcasses.

Not a summer toy at all, I just ride everywhere in a "spirited" manner, so like the grip available, plus I know I'll need to whack some PR3s on come winter anyway.

What sort of tyres would you go with for that mileage?

Ill probably get murdered with a hammer by some people here, however my Avon storm 2's are great, and the PR4 GT on sandtigers MT03 are really grippy.

I'm still in love with PR2s at the moment. I'll probably move up to the 4s when those aren't available any more. How did I choose PR2s? I won a pair for letter of the month in either Ride or Bike magazine, can't remember which now, and just found they suited my bike and riding style perfectly, so have stuck with them ever since. I'm really confident in them, wet or dry, so see no reason to change.

But on a ZX10R - don't think I could help there, maybe you want something a bit sportier, although many folks say sports/touring tyres are fine for almost all road riding situations these days.

I would give the Metzeler M7RR a go, I have the Z8 touring tyres on my STR and they are really good in anything from winter greasy roads to a Track day last week so the more sporty version should suit you.

Or sticking with Dunlops the sportsmart 2 seems to get decent reviews, I have had bikes with both Qualifier 1 and 2 tyres and didn't gel with either tyre. Both were sketchy in damp/cool conditions on a 650 (Q1 SV650, Q2 Daytona 650)
