Do single front discs look cheap and nasty?

Hello again everyone

So, I've been pottering about for two years, have just redone my CBT, and it's time to move up.

There are loads of nice bikes. On the potential list are one of the CB500s or NC700s. But does the single front disc look so naff I should get another bike?

Symmetry is always nice on a bike because it suggests balance, but an extra disc when it's not necessary is potentially extra maintenance.

If the brakes are effective enough, don't worry about it. Look at it this way - makes the wheel easier to clean

In fact, take all the discs off, then you can always have really shiny wheels

On the contrary - dual brake discs look heavy and expensive.

A light weight single with a single is quite pretty - say a Suzuki Goose.

But then an NC700 just looks like overpriced boredom to me .

at £120 per disc for the front on the ZZR600 I wish it only had one!

having said that, I think it needs two to stop it's huge fat ass

I should think that single or dual front discs would be low down on the priorities list when it comes to bikes.

It's a bit like ruling cars out for having rear drum brakes instead of discs.

Unless you've got a specific reason, other than looks, it's not a big deal.


But it's your bike, your money etc, if its that big a deal then thats your call.

My view is, if it has only one disc, thats because it only needs or wants one disc... two would be unnecessarily heavy/expensive/more maintenance

Might as well start worrying about how narrow your forks and frame tubes are Still, I'm the guy who thought the ER6n's exhaust headers looked like a nutsack when viewed from the right side so I can't really go around knocking someone for fussing over brake discs.

Brake discs are like cocks.........size is important! Most single disc bikes have bigger than average discs. A lot of single disc bikes can be converted to dual discs without too much effort but if only one is fitted, you usually find it's enough. Forget what you and the bike look like....it's a slippery slope

It's nice and easy to properly clean a front wheel with a single disc setup

You can usually get at the valves to inflate the tyres with a single disc. Not always the case with twin ones.
