I'll try to keep this brief.

Moved in with my mate, I'm not listed as living there apparently to 'save money on council tax', but I don't buy that for a second, if I was listed, and the council tax went up, I'd pay the other half... so what's the problem?

Spoke to family who said I need to be on it or, down the line, I'll get asked where I have been living and if they figure out I've been living here and not paying CT, I'll end up with a massive backlog to pay - true?

What should I do?

*update*

Apparently the flat is some sort of 'family only' type premises. This sounds like a load of shite to me?

I always thought council tax was based on the value of a property on a given date. Not how many / what types of people live in it.

They are scamming and you are the feeder.

You get a 25% reduction for single occupancy on council tax.

But the only time you living there would an issue is if your mate is claiming housing and council tax benefits.

Ask him why its still an issue if your willing to pay the extra

Also as far as I am aware they don't back date council tax, you pay it when you live in a place and stop when move out.

Besides its your mate who would be in trouble as his name that is officially listed at that address

** EDIT **

Just spotted your north of the boarder, so this may be slightly different.

He gets single man discount, which is only 25%. If you offer to pay half of the new total he'd save overall.

It's easy to add/remove people by phoning council. My council claimed that they check things like bills/account addresses, electoral register to find evaders. No idea if they do, but collecting tax is probably the only thing councils put any effort into.

If you have issues with stipulations about who can live in the flat, tell them you are gays and see how quickly they retreat.

Donny is right, do this. When angry letters come through, invite them round to break the news to them. Watch them squirm, it'd be hilarious.

It turns out it's not council tax, which is what I was told initially, now it's a family-only rent agreement. Never heard of that and it poses more cons than pro's each party so I don't believe it.

Think I'll just get my own place to be honest.

It the place council or housing association? If so I can understand how he'd be in the shit for subletting.

Problem for you is not being on the electoral role. Technically this is illegal and carries a fine but I've never known it followed up. More realistic problem is an inability to get credit anywhere.

They used to, in some places. This is illegal now. You are within your rights to be a gay couple who have no physical contact, just emotional.

Cant see the drama myself, sounds like you're the lodger. His communication / lies to the local council don't really concern you.

I've had arrangement like this when a student, didn't have to 'register' with anyone to say I was living there.

so basically hes claiming every benefit he can including a council flat then hes also subletting a room to you for extra ££ too - he wont want any record of you being there as he will lose some benefits.

you are being used.

Not sure if not fully understanding but to clarify - he isn't on benefits, he works full time too.

Not 100% sure how he would benefit from this?

Maybe he knows he's not allowed to sub-let.
Having a lodger isn't sub-letting though.
Does he really understand his own tenancy agreement?
