was talking to a mate yesterday who rides with a scooter club I was a member of (when I had a vespa)

he passed his test before the mod 1 and 2 bit came in on a 125cc scooter so got a restricted licence for two years
this came off years ago and he was riding about on a vespa 300cc scooter

since then he bought a Aprilia mana to ride but got rid and went back to the vespa

he has now bought a vespa px125 which has gears

can he use it on the motorway Question

I say no as he is riding as a learner on the scooter

he thinks he can as he has a full licence

who is right?

What does his licence say in respect of restrictions?

Auto licence means you can ride any auto, no manual AFAIK.

I was under the impression that if you passed your test on an automatic, you can only ride automatics. Whereas if you pass your tests on a manual, you can ride both automatic and manual bikes (I believe it's the same case with a car license to).

Correct. It'll have a code 78 restriction on the licence hence why I asked.

If that is the case then he'll need to be riding the new geared thing as a learner which means he needs a CBT a set of Losers and a motorway avoidance function on his sat nav

Forgot to add he rides it on L plates anyway but seems to think he has a permanent cbt due to full licence

This is all because he wants to join the club on the iow run bank holiday
But they all use the motorway to get to Portsmouth

I've told him to take the 300 and not worry

The thread title both asks and answers its own question.

Thinking about it. He may be right on the CBT front at least.

I'm very confident that he can't ride that 125 on the motorway, as his full license entitles him to ride on the motorway and his full license restricts him to an automatic, which his 125 isn't.

As for him not having to renew his CBT, he may well be right but, i'm not certain.

As your CBT doesn't restrict you to automatic/manual like your full license does and once you've done your full license you don't need to re-do your CBT again. So does that mean once you've got your full automatic only bike license you can still ride geared bikes, but only if they meet the CBT bike requirements (under11kw/15bhp etc) Thinking

I didn't know you could do an automatic only test, but according to this it should be a full category A licence, with a code 106.

He has 78 on it which is the same as 106 but that's the full part

He has now decided to take his van with the px in the back and just ride it once there

Would anyone really care though if a safe sensible road user with an auto only license was out riding a geared bike or scooter?

And more to the point, would you or I go out after passing a full test and gaining un-restricted capacity/power licence, actually be bothered about doing another test to add manual vehicles to it?

It does not mean the rider/driver is any less safe or more likely to cause an accident and it's another bureaucratic money making Brussels led load of old bollocks.

Fair play to the young people that can actually be bothered to put themselves out again and again at considerable expense to gain all the bike licences from zero-unrestricted and over a period of 9years to do it all. I would not bother getting into bikes as a newbie today, it's not worth the hoops to jump through and expense IMO.

To be honest I'm the same

If my scooter hadn't broke down on test day I would of had the same licence as him

But it did ,I did and I'm here
