So did i really need to spend so much on training & tests?

I used the aforementioned website and took a snippet of my licence details on 20th July 2015, before i took my Mod 1 & 2 tests.
https://s12.postimg.org/b7zvocjq5/Cat_A.jpg

After passing my Mod 2 on the 22nd August 2015, i thought this afternoon i'd have another look
https://s3.postimg.org/9dknikj2b/DVSA.jpg

I realise that the DVSA have had a lot of problems but i find myself wondering if i should have just applied for a replacement licence and started riding.
Don't get me wrong, i'm glad to have spent the time training on a larger bike but i do begrudge the money for the 3 tests.

If only it was that simple.

No restrictions in both cases. The only thing to have changed is the "From" date. Changed to the date i actually passed the Mod 2 Neutral

Seems hit and miss then, but that's an improvement over miss and miss I suppose.

Is it your B1 entitlement? If so it can still show up as a category A even if you're limited to trikes.

It would be interesting to see someone else's, perhaps someone who passed several years ago to see if the wording was any different?

I checked mine not so long ago. Prior to taking your tests, your photo card will have shown category A entitlement with trike restriction. Now your photo card will show full entitlement.

The website appears to be shit because it doesn't tell me that I have a trike restriction either. It indicates that I have an unrestricted A license, when I don't and will probably show the same thing once I have passed.

Yup, we've had a few folk report this now. 19th January 2013 is when the 3DLD came in. Anyone who'd passed their car test before then got trike entitlement, which shows as category A, with 79/3/tri or whatever mystery restriction code they're showing this week. Or in your case, not showing.

They've spacked it up big style. You could let them know, although good luck finding anyone who even understands your point, or cares.

The problem is they've simply 'computerised' a manual system more applicable to the 1960s. Instead of an archaic system of meaninless codes and sub codes they should have created a unique code for each possible combination of entitlements and just displayed to the user a plain simple text description of that they're entitled to.

So instead of "category A You can ride big bikes but not really it's only trikes"

"Full car entitlement
Full Motor tricycle entitlement
Provisional motorcyle (125 L plates blah blah blah)"

They're dealing with ordinary people, not boffins. In this day & age there's no logical reason to make it confusing, so why not make it plain & simple to understand?

Well, they've simplified mine down a bit.

https://i.imgur.com/YnBtmTs.png?1

Along with the usual 2 stolen years of A entitlement, they've elided all that bollocks in charliemopic's records. Just "any size motorbike, with or without a sidecar."

But nowhere in any of my categories (A obtained in 2010, B obtained in 1989) does it mention trikes.

So according to their definitive record, I can't ride/drive a trike either under my bike or my car entitlement?

The thing is, this stuff is actually their day job. Brick Wall

Feedback fed back, complaint lodged with DVLA, again.

Same here, I wonder if they're classifying trikes as cars with three wheels. Be nice if they made it clear.

Apparantly I can drive one of those gigantic forestry tractors Thumbs Up Very Happy

God alone knows, I can't follow it.

I do know that "light" and "heavy" "quadricycles" are considered to be "three wheeled mopeds" and "motor tricycles" respectively.

Thanks, Brussels, that's just... wait, if trikes need a bike license, do I need to pass a two wheel vehicle test to drive a four wheeled... uh... Eh? Neutral Question

I have to assume that they mean well, because I don't believe that they're competent enough to screw things up this badly on purpose.

I passed my bike test via DAS in 2001, so before all this Mod 1/2 malarkey. mine is the same as charliemopic's, stating:

DVLA wrote:
You can drive a motorcycle of a power exceeding 35kW or with a power to weight ratio exceeding 0.2kW per kg, or A motorcycle of a power not exceeding 35kW with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW per kg and derived from a vehicle of more than double its power. A motor tricycle with a power exceeding 15kW

As is my wont, I analysed this wording thoroughly. It seems that I can not ride a bike with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW per kg but derived from a vehicle of less than double its power (in other words, I can't ride a bike restricted to meet A2 classification).

Looking at it with an increasingly pedantic and critical eye, I also can not ride a large but gutless bike (so a bike exceeding 35kW but with a power-to-weight ratio lower than 0.2 kW/kg.

It seems they have written the restrictions for A2 and then said for A you can ride all the stuff you can't ride on A2 (but in writing it this way they have literally excluded the A2-compliant bikes).

Doh!

But why is mine just "any size motorbike", without a mention of trikes? I passed before 3DLD as well.

DVLA, Y U NO MAEK SENCE!??!

Trikes are now under B1

Image of category B1 vehicle

Description

You can drive 3 or 4-wheeled vehicles up to 400kg unladen or 550kg if intended to carry goods

When I got my trike entitlement it was with a bike license, as per Reliant Robin on a bike license.

Now it seems to be chucked in with quads so I presume it's a car entitlement.

As i thought, i received my licence today with the full A category that i'm now entitled to. The A1 & A2 parts on the rear of the licence are blank, and going on what weasley is suggesting it would be illegal to now ride my 125cc machine Rolling Eyes

I don't know what's going on with mine, but I'm not complaining. They haven't stolen 2 years from my licence. I passed my mod 2 in 2011. The only thing I can think of is that I've never sent my licence back to them (because my picture hasn't expired yet). So my physical licence still shows the restriction.

Mine is showing the newer restrictions rather than the old ones - Even though I passed my test in 2011 and have been restriction free for 2 years. I have yet to update my licence (For fear of losing 2 years of riding).

The NI based DVA in Coleraine left me with my 2 years riding on my full A category, but put my A2 category and A1 from the end of my restriction period. (So not too bad really!)

Generally there is abit of common sense up there, Swansea however..... Rolling Eyes

If you "share" your licence info you get to print off a licence ... this is the eqv of the paper licence... you can give out so you can prove what you drive to a hire firm.

I only have an A1 licence... yet...

Some DVLA mouthpiece actually suggested doing this when the system fell apart.

So... just like the counterparts that you told us to tear up? Brick Wall
