Breaking news on BBC is there could be more casualties (really? How rare)

Nothing about this at all. That would make things a bit lively to say the least in the political sense - all kinds of noises would get made

It's incredibly rare for bystanders to be harmed at airshows in the UK by the aircraft. There's a much better case for banning motorbikes than banning airshows Wink

ITV just said he wasn't scheduled, was the original pilots cousin filling in, and hadn't flown this type of jet the required amount of hours in a certain amount of time.

ITV full of shit, it is true that another pilot was scheduled originally but he pulled out months ago. There's probably only a handful of pilots in the world type certified with a display authorisation for the Hunter so it's a small club who do it regularly.

Ban low flying manouvres over populated areas? Or accept this crash as a one off accident?

Wait for the AAIB report, but gut feeling is pilot error/human failure. This is the first time in British history that non-participants at an airshow have been killed so hopefully no knee jerk response. If they did ban low level activity over populated areas then that's most of the major air displays done for, nobody comes to see a speck in the sky and most of the onshore ones are in population centres.

It's not the first. The last was in 1952 when a Sea Vixen crashed at Farnborough and killed 29 people. Still, it was a very long time ago. There are real safety issues at air shows but the aircraft hitting spectators isn't one of them. Transport to and from the air show, elderly people in the heat, photographers on ladders, the f**king wasp that stung me in the face and so on.

The knee jerk has already started. No aerobatics from vintage planes, only fly pasts and some others I cant remember.

Farnborough is the reason the display line is no longer over spectators, however spectators are participants in the air show. In this case the people killed were not even spectators, that why it's a first.

That's fairly standard in the early stages of an investigation - often restrictions are removed again fairly quickly.

Unsurprisingly, the official verdict is the pilot fucked up.

I heard they couldn't see anything on the cockpit vid...what have you heard?

He went into the loop at 200ft, should have been over 500ft. Angle on the loop was too steep so instead of exiting at the entry height he ended up exiting lower, if he'd started at the right height he might have got away with it.

Yes, looks liked he fucked up, and he is going to have to live with it for the rest of his life.

I bet he will wish he had died in the crash, poor chap.

I do not mean this to sound I do not have any sympathy for the dead and their families, I really do.

I'm not sure if I would blame him as much as the organisers. I presume they have someone who checks pilots credentials etc?

You keep going on about his credentials, but this hasn't been reported with any source that he was unable to fly that aircraft.

Andy Hill, 51, from Sandon, near Buntingford in Hertfordshire, is a former RAF instructor and British Airways pilot. He is also an experienced aerobatic stunt flyer who has performed at shows up and down the country.

Mr Hill was pulled from the burning wreckage, with multiple injuries. He was placed in a medically-induced coma and is now in a critical but stable condition at an unnamed specialist hospital.

His family said they were devastated and deeply saddened for the loss of life, and sent condolences to the families of those affected.

The flying of the Hawker Hunter jet at air displays was shared between Mr Hill and another pilot, Chris Heames, who was on holiday when the crash took place.

He says he was shocked and confused when he learned what had happened.

"I didn't quite understand how that could happen, because the airshow rules that we fly to are very stringent, and they are specifically designed to protect the public," he told the BBC.

He described Mr Hill as a top RAF pilot, the "cream from the cream" who had been selected to fly the Harrier.
"He was one of the guys who would always go out of his way to help others," he said. "He worked for British Airways and in the time he had available, he helped other people learn to fly ex-military aircraft."

George Bacon, of the British Air Display Association, who has worked with Mr Hill, told BBC News he is an "unbelievably experienced" pilot, and his preparation for air displays was always "second to none".

Missed out: "but he really fucked up this time."

They may think it's a good idea.

They may even be too stupid to see the uselessness of praising his skillz to high heaven, when we've all had a good look at his professionalism on Youtube.

They're really trying to say: "He doesn't usually fuck up."

And I'm prepared to believe he doesn't.
