So I'm hoping to upgrade from OEM to Ohlins soon and wanted to hear people's experiences regarding insurance.

I've read that some underwriters couldn't care less and actually say you don't have to declare it as it falls under consumables/they're the same part serving the same purpose just with a shiny label etc etc.

I'm insured with Motorcycle Direct, not sure who their shadowy overlords are though.

I declared, no change. It's worth telling them though.

I don't think they could wriggle out of a claim against you, but they're not going to pay out for new Ohlins suspension, if you make a claim against a third party!

Why? The 3rd party are obligated to repair your bike to its pre-accident condition or write it off and give you it's value. They have no access to your policy and what it covers. Bad advice is bad.

If you dont declare it, it wont be covered if you crash. My insurance didnt change with performance mods on my bike, so im sure yours wont either.

If you're planning to banana the front forks while not quite writing the bike off in an at-fault crash, fair enough. However, in the event of a write-off (made more likely because of the expensive parts...) they'll pay market value. And as every fool know, adding go-fasta parts doesn't actually add a penny to the value.

tl;dr version - I'd rather tongue-bathe a leper than voluntarily contact an insurer.
