Is it worth taking out extended warranty insurance?

YAMAHA XJ6, two and a bit years old about 4 to 5k miles per year. I went online and got a quote of £188 to £233 per year depending on if work was done by a dealer or non dealer garage. Seems steep to me but I know nothing about this kind of insurance.

I assume you're meaning extended warranty. Wink

Read the small print. Read the reviews on all the usual sites. Tell us which company it is.

It all comes down to the small print so get reading. I'd expect you'll have to have it serviced by a dealer or VAT registered garage so that additional cost over DIY servicing could well negate any benefits of the warranty.

Personally, I doubt the extended warranty is worth the paper its printed on.

(not that you're going to read this cos you set me to enemy Laughing)

it is if you're selling it, the markups are huge

and they don't cover wear and tear, which is where most of your problems will arise from

And the rest of the info is?

Are you planning on keeping it? Are you planning on maintaining it to service record? Are you mechanically minded? What's the bike worth working / broken? Are you a type that likes a stress free hand it back type of life or happy to do without it if stuff goes wrong?

Those are the sorts of things you need to consider. 200 quid isn't a lot of money for peace of mind even if the warranty only covers the big stuff. But for me, peace of mind is chopping a boring bike in for another boring brand new one and starting the process again

Not worth it unless it's dealer approved and then, as mentioned the small print can be a ball ache.

Non franchise insurance is practically worthless as they will not fix 'known' problems and will normally have exclusions for them in the small print.

While £200 may not be a lot. The real cost is all the dealer servicing that you will have to keep up.
You could be looking at 4 to 5 times the warranty cost in servicing if you rack up the miles...

9 times out of 10 they're not worth the paper they're printed on.

Exactly. Hence if he was planning to keep up the service record and keep the bike and wants the peace of mind then.....

Basically there's a load of different circumstances and mindsets around this type of issue and what's worthwhile to one person will be a waste of time to another

Wouldn't do it myself

I'm not going to bother with it. Got a few more quotes and its all in the £150+ range. Not worth it. Maybe would have for fifty quid.

I got the extended warranty once, only because it came with European breakdown and recovery service (the standard warranty was U.K. only) and the difference in price was very, very sightly less than what I would pay through RAC or AA for the same European breakdown cover.

I don't expect any other benefit, and wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

£200 odd is a piss take for a 2 year old Jap bike.

I've never had one go wrong at that age (and even if it did, I doubt that these warranties would pay).
