in the market for a new chain, i have a crappy oxford hardcore XL currently but after reading many review decided i would like something better. am i right in thinking the almax series IV with the squire lock is probably the best i will get or any others to consider? Thumbs Up

The Almax Series IV is considered to be the best but there's a reason not every bike is locked up with one. People make sacrifices for portability and budget.

I'd go for an Almax chain personally, but as above; they are bloody heavy and not suitable for transporting in a lot of situations.

Pragmasis chains also get fairly good reviews as a possible alternative.

purely for overnight chaining in my garage just incase. i park in a secure car park at work with cameras and use alarm disc lock there

If you're going to bother spending Almax-money on a chain i'd definitely ground anchor it personally, or its just one extra expensive thing to get dragged into a van.

Given the choice though, i'd rather have a good garage defender even if it meant no chain/anchor personally. I've had my bike garaged and known about in an area that wasn't great in the past and had people try break into the garage a few times there and once in my current place, but they've never got in with one of these fitted to even try and deal with the Almax and anchor.

i currently chain to a big solid ladder in my garage but will be investing in an anchor too.

unfortunately my garage is the old style one with two doors which opens outwards, big heavy duty doors though so that wouldnt work but will keep in mind for future if changing house with an up and over garage

I've seen that gear gremlin do this chain and lock. I have no idea what it's like for protection but looks like a mid-weight between security and being able to carry it around all the time. Saw one in the shop in person and looks bulky enough. Suppose you could always replace the lock for piece of mind.

They also do this disc lock. Only disc lock I've seen that is 16mm, again not sure of quality but fancy it myself.

Edit: the above is a suggestion based on portability, use other suggestions for home security. (based on amount of opinions / reviews of the same nature, positive that is).
