Hi, I have a 883r 02reg, I've had it about 5 years and every year promise to get some use out of it and maybe uprate it to 1200.
My question is though, is there a quick and easy way to find out whether this has already been done? I'd hate to buy a 1200 kit and find I've already got one. Cheers guys.

If you don't want to take a cylinder head off, to measure the bore, you can fill one cylinder with oil from a burette, through the spark plug hole and see how much it took at top dead centre and at bottom dead centre. The difference is the swept volume of that cylinder.

I looked... Shocked

Smile

You have your answer Sir.

Oh and to get better use of the beast move to Florida/California. At least they get 'Harley Owner Weather' there.

A lawyer chap who lived next door to a place I lived in Fl. had a big eff-off Gleaming Harley. Pretty bike.
It was out twice I know of. Once to get serviced and once to get valeted. Shocked

I really enjoy any ride out on it, and as my zzr is now destroyed it will move up the ranking for use, beautiful bike though, pity about all its short comings, speed, power, handling, but I can live with that😍

Sportsters are fine bikes.

Easiest way to check is to look through the pile of receipts you have with it. Or take it to a Harley dealer.

Reminds me of an old joke-what's the first journey an 883 makes? Off to buy a 1200 conversion kit.

Well harley keep saying they struggle to get younger buyers. What I think they need to do is bring out a stupidly powerful bike like 180bhp and have it all black with no tarty chrome nonsense.

Some fceker broke into the Harley factory design dept. one night and put the V-rod into the production system computer (ledger book).
That certainly broke with their 'Age of Steam' tradition.
I thought it looked good for a Harley.
Until they brought out the Night Rod and it didn't look as cool IMO. Very Happy

The v-rod is the one I test rode. 110bhp I believe. It actually wasn't too bad but still not my cup of tea.

Who is going to want to spend a large sum of money on a big heavy bike with 50bhp.

884cc is "going on for" twice the size...............nein?

First it's 883 not 884, Laughing

'Going on for twice the size' would apply almost twice the size it isn't its far more than twice the size. 1766 is twice 883 which is nowhere near 1200 let alone 'going on for' it.

WTF is that? Confused Like a bracelet come multi-tool? Confused

EDIT; OMG...200 knicker Shocked As a bracelet type thingy, while I wouldn't wear one myself as it'd just get caught on everything and probably brake my wrist within a week, I quite like it Embarassed As a tool, it looks complete pants. On their promo vid, the bloke demonstrating it has to use a normal Leatherman to get to the tools Very Happy I think it's like a "secret handshake" to other Macho Insecure types when they're in their suits at work. But £200 is a joke Laughing

£139.00 free P&P

He only uses a real Leatherman tool to adjust the bracelet size that's all. Rolling Eyes

This - it'll cost what, £30 max? And give you an accurate indication as to whether it's a 1200 or an a 883, based on the assumption that the 1200 makes noticeably more bhp and torque than the 883.

To answer the OPs question, and to pick up on what someone else suggested, look through the big pile of receipts.

A dyno run might not tell you that much. There isn't a huge difference in power output between the 883 and the 1200 - maybe 10hp - but there is a big difference in torque.

It's also quite hard to pin down just what the standard power output should be on an 883. It can vary from about 40-60hp depending on the state of tune. A stock one is very similar to a superdream to ride, in terms of power output and noise.

The 1200 conversion can also have many different flavours - you can use 883, 1200 or buell heads. You can go for new harley barrels and pistons, have your existing barrels rebored, maybe go a little over 1200 with aftermarket pistons.

So I would look in the paperwork, or measure it with a burette.
