I’ve had my Kawasaki VN2000 for 3 months now and it been going great but lately I have noticed a metallic whining noise coming from the bike. Its progressively got louder over the last 200 miles and initially when I heard it I thought it was the front wheel bearing but now I’m not so sure. It only makes this noise on acceleration, on deceleration it doesn’t. It only happens from 2nd gear upwards, can’t tell if it does it in lower gears as the engine noise drowns it out.
The oil level is OK, and the bike was last serviced around 10,000 miles ago. Any ideas?

By last serviced do you mean you've not changed the oil in 10k?

Yep, think so, the fella who I bought the bike off told me it had been serviced 10,00 miles ago which I assume meant that was the last oil change. I've done roughly 1000 miles on it.

Ten thousand miles on the same oil? Dude, I know it's a cruiser, but it's not a car. Get that oil swapped out sharpish.

Service manual says oil and filter every 7500 miles...
https://www.waltreiss.com/ebay/VN2000A1.pdf

If nothing has been done to it in 11k I'd say it needs a good service.

Even though the seller could have been an honest man, I wouldn't trust anyone that would claim that. Especially when it comes to oil changes. Always change the oil and filter when you buy a motorized vehicle. It's cheap and easy to do so. Thumbs Up

Change the oil and filter, get back here and tell us what are the results. Also, try this site: https://www.kawasakimotorcycle.org/forum/kawasaki-cruisers/70713-kawasaki-vn2000-noise.html

Thanks to all who replied!

Well, I'm going to change the oil and filter anyway now so it should take it out of the equation and also replace the oil too. The problem outlined in the link above really does sound like the problem I'm having. I can relate to the noise occurring from around 40mph to 70mph, although I've sometimes had it at slightly lower speeds too.

I'm going to ring the local Kawasaki dealer and see what they have to say about the problem and whether its a known issue.

Give it a decent Service, not just the oil/filter.

Maybe the belt needs dressing ?
but as above, if it hasn't had a good seeing to for 10k
it's in dire need of one.

Assume nothing the previous owner told you is true - first thing to do on a new (2nd Hand) bike to is drop the oil and get a new filter in there.

Previous owners aren't best know for telling the truth.

Congratulations, the new ford Ecoboost engines can get that out of a 1 litre. Thumbs Up It doesn't matter anyway as I very much doubt an engine that hasn't been serviced is producing near that...

Well I serviced the bike yesterday. Oil wasn’t too bad as it goes but the filter and oil were changed. The spark plugs weren’t too bad either, just rusty but they came out easily enough. Brake pads were changed, although really they had a few thousand miles left on them too. The front tyre was a few psi too low as well, so all in all, not too bad for 10,000 miles (if the bloke was telling the truth).

The belt was a strange one. We noticed that the rear wheel was about 1.5mm out of alignment so that was rectified, but the belt seemed to be located over towards the crank case on the front pulley. I've added a picture of that so if anyone can tell me if that is standard location for a belt drive that would be appreciated. The tension was checked and that was OK so the reasoning was that if it was taken for a spin, with the wheel alignment corrected it should move over slightly. I took it for a ride round the block but the belt hadn’t moved over on the front pulley. Surprisingly there was no whining noise though and I’m starting to think that it may have only made the whining noise when it was wet after a heavy rainfall. I’m taking it out at the weekend for a long run down to Kent so may find something then.

The 'extended' service interval probably isn't causing any whine. That usually causes a 'Rattling Chooch'. Smile

The alternator on my 1300 makes a lot of noise like a biatch. Since new.

The belt has to be prime suspect, I wonder what interval they're supposed to be changed at.
I'm not that surprised it has freeplay to move side to side to self adjust.

Its quoted in the handbook as having to be changed every 50k miles. Hasn't done that yet, its on about 30k. Haven't heard much of a whine since, will probably find out if its connected to wet weather the next time there's a downpour.
