Will this buff out?

So, I've been looking at doing up the ZX10R myself. Kawasaki OEM parts - £4758.87. eBay fairing kit and good condition parts - £810.

I really don't want to lose this bike, so I'm sure that when it comes to it, I'll buy it back and fix it up. The biggest portion of that cost is the fuel tank, and that's an unpainted one from the states. They're rocking horse shit to find, and I'll be buggered if I'm paying Kawasaki £1170 for a new one.

I've seen people remove some serious dents from tanks, but I'm wondering if the damage to my tank is even beyond repair? There are definitely no holes in the tank, but I'm worried with the fold that the metal may crack when being bent back? I'm not sure what tanks are made from.

tl;dr is this repairable? Or should I bin it?

I would look firstly at the frame for damage.
If that is bent or cracked then it's game over for the bike.
Then it would be a frame you would be looking for.
Tank is more or less junk.

You still have wheels on so you could at least check wheel alignment.
And the wheel centre.

The fact that the tank has been crushed suggests a massive load possible headstock/fork damage.

But not simple to evaluate from the comfort of my armchair/settee.

That tank is double triple quadruple creased! I wouldn't fix it... and I crashed my old CBR just as badly back in 2007. Cost me a lot less than I realised though.

Just doing that now. The 2006 looks like the frame is the same. I know there were steering geometry changes, but I don't think there's anything affecting the actual frame other than the head angle.

Just made this up from screenshots of the parts catalogue, 04 vs 06, I reckon it's the same fitment and tank, they've just made it a very slightly less aggressive shape to match the front of the bike. Would take a trained eye to spot mind you.

Just a thought, probably bollox, but with a new tank costing over £1k, how much would a bespoke alloy or plastic tank cost to have made?

How much of the tank is airbox and how much is actual fuel tank?

Fill tank with water.

Seal tank, place in a large chest freezer.

As the water freezes, the expansion will pop the tank back into shape.

Remove tank, thaw, drain and rinse thoroughly with methylated spirit.

Refit tank to bike, fill and ride.

It's a bit dodgy getting tanks sent by air anywhere now due to the fumes and tighter security. It can be done if crucial though. Have you looked on all the other Euro ebay sites too?

There seems to be a few tanks u could have shipped in from over the water... All damaged tbf, but more salvageable than your current tank & the damage/potential messy repairs you undertake on some of the linked tanks I've put in, may just get hidden by a tank cover.

The above + a fairing kit that includes a tank cover, like this one would mean you wouldnt need the tank sprayed either.

And to answer your originally question... I highly doubt that tank will buff out
