Normandy.Went there for a bit of an historical tour round the world war two sites and it was brilliant. For anyone that has'nt been it's well worth a visit, especially if you're interested in getting a greater understanding of what the soldiers (from all nationalities)went through,it was quite humbling to be honest.
We are off again next year, there's so much to see we could'nt fit it all in this time, if you are thinking about doing it just do it,you won't be disappointed.

Did you just have a traipse around and find things for yourself, or use any kind of guided tour, or do any research about what you wanted to see first?

Yeah, wouldn't mind seeing a few more pics, and maybe hear a bit more of your thoughts on what you saw?

Would still love to explore the Battle of the Bulge region in the Ardennes too...*sigh*, will I ever get around to any of this stuff? Rolling Eyes

My thoughts too.
I'll have to make a plan to do some kind of war site memorial tour on the bike but I don't fancy a solo trip.
I'd like to see some more pics btw. Wink

Luckily we had a friend who had been to the Normandy area a number of times so he gave us a guided tour.A lot of the interesting places are fairly close together anyway such as the main allied landing beaches, pegasus bridge, the war cemetaries, loads of museums and Aromanche where the artificial harbour was built.
As to my thoughts on what I saw........it's a real eye opener and a very humbling experience in my opinion. When you stand on the beaches where many soldiers gave their lives or visit the cemetaries(we did all three),it somehow becomes a lot more real if that makes sense. It was especially humbling to see veteran soldiers walking around the sights reliving their memories.......nearly choked me up if i'm honest.
We are off again next year for a longer stint so we can take it all in at a more leisurely pace, there's so much to see it's worth booking a couple of weeks to take it all in......i did'nt want to come back.

The campaign in Europe from D-Day has always been a fascination of mine. The picture of Wittman's grave surprised me a little. From what I have read, Wittman was an ardent Nazi, but you can't deny his action at Villers-Bocage was a stunning victory for the panzer ace, helping to cement the fear and awe in which Allied troops held the Tiger. Nazi or not, he certainly stamped his place in history with that action, and never mind the success he achieved on the Eastern Front before that.

Point du Hoc I think was assaulted by a unit of US Rangers, and it so very nearly didn't even succeed in scaling the cliffs. Just one of many cases of incredible courage displayed by allied troops on that momentous day. Some of the Rangers would have used those craters for cover from German fire.

I really must make some effort to get over and see some of this for myself, thanks for the pics Thumbs Up
