There's been an increase in break ins where I live and I constantly worry about someone breaking in to the garage and lifting the bike.

One thing I'm un-sure about, is when you buy a wireless IP camera, how do you power them?

I thought the whole point of wireless is no wires? If so, how would I power a camera sat 30ft away on my garage? Would I need to run a power cable in to the garage?

Any recommendations? I only want a single camera setup, don't need DVR really, just something with motion detection / recording.

Alternatively you'll need power to the garage - maybe leisure battery, inverter & a solar panel. Depends how much effort/cash you want to drop on it.

Battery powered though from what I gather on the website and it says they last 6 months but based on viewing for 5 minutes a day and are indoor only.

I want to mount a camera 15ft in the air pointing down at the driveway / garage, so don't want to be changing batteries every few weeks.

They do outdoor ones, check the Arlo link on Amazon (above) - you probably won't be viewing them for 5 mins a day either - you're only really interested in the camera alerts, no? (If so, mucho longo lifetime on the battery)
Failing this, mains or leisure battery.

If you can run an ethernet cable to your garage (maybe on a catenary wire) then you could use an external IP camera powered by POE (power over ethernet).

You'd just need a POE injector to connect it to your router and provide power. These only cost around £20ish

My logic : Mount a wireless camera on the side of the house, pointing down at the garage with night visions / IR , all that stuff.

Run a DC / Ethernet PoE cable to the nearest socket / drill in to the house.

I don't want to be fucking about with batteries at all and I only need one camera which can oversee the house / garage / driveway. I'd probably configure it to upload video / photo to my server on motion, rather than have a DVR constantly running.

It would be best to run power out.
You must wish there was power anyway for charger and lights at least?

If you go wireless the wifi might be borderline but you could have a powerline adapter out there and plug it in the ethernet.
Looking at the door from under the house eaves would be useful though.

You don't need spend much on an IP cam, the £50 ones from ebay are pretty good.
Typically they will email you a still or short clip of any movement, but if you want to record continuously you need a computer running - might not be a problem but can be annoying.
An old laptop or netbook will do, it's not very demanding if that's all it does.

We have one on the yard and the dodgy intruder count is still zero but detecting courier/postman/visitor without jumping up to look out is well worthwhile in itself.

With POE you wouldn't need to use wireless

You specifically asked what you could do from your garage with no power in there.
Mounting it on the house pointing at the garage is a no brainer if it's a viable option (i.e. you can see enough in the shot) - but that's not the question you asked originally.

Plus your logic is slightly flawed, if you're mounting a camera on the house, then just use PoE, have a single cable going to it and don't f'ck about with WiFi if you don't have to. Wired > Wireless.

Wireless can easily be blocked. Do as others have said and go the PoE route - don't forget to run the cabling through some thick metal piping too.

Going slightly off topic but CCTV will not stop the scrotes from nicking your bike. They'll merely cover their faces and wear gloves. Concentrate on physical security and making your garage like Fort Knox.

Physical security is in place, just wanted that extra layer there in case some fuck wit tries anything without a mask / hood on. To be honest, I live in quite a nice area, I've left the garage doors wide open several times, with bikes in there, all night.
