I've owned my Hornet for 6 months now. I enjoy riding it but my girlfriend has taken an interest in coming out with me. We have done a few hours in total and fancy changing some something a little more suitable. Not expecting to do huge mileage with her, but this might change if we like it.

I fancy upgrading to something with more power and was considering selling the Hornet and buying a Street Triple.

On the other hand, I was thinking about keeping the Hornet and getting a CBR1100XX for 1.5-2k which I could use for touring and 2 up.

What would you guys do? Is the Blackbird a little overkill? Or is there a better bike that would be suitable?

BB in my opinion is a good option. There's quite a few luggage sets for if you want to go touring too on evil bay.

I've never liked Triumphs personally. While they may well have improved reliability I've known far too many have the big end go.

I'm not convinced the Street Triple will actually be that much of a hike in power from the hornet. The hornet has near enough 100BHP, and the Street Triple has 107BHP I believe.

If you're set on one of those two, I would probably go for the Blackbird, if you're going to be having a pillion often.

EDIT: Just seen the bit at the end about suggestions for something more suitable. ST1100 Pan European (£2k will get you a good one), and keep the Hornet for Sunday blasts.

Blackbird if you want to tour a bit, no doubt.

If age isn't a barrier, £2K can buy you a lot of different bikes.

Bird isn't a bad shout, but there are other tourers about at that price - Pan has been mentioned, BMW K bikes could be in the frame, as would XJ/FJ Yams, or if you want a bit more sports, VFRs and ZZR1100s are possibles.

You might have to narrow it down a bit.

I'm 29 and been riding since February. So insurance is an issue, although I have had quotes for £900 for a Blackbird FC and £300 TPFT.

I do fancy something more sports orientated with light touring capabilities.

I like the idea of having an older cruise missile for longer journeys and the Hornet for around town and weekend blasts.

But on the other hand, do I go for a Striple or maybe even join the litre club?

My only niggle with the hornet is the size of it. I'm 6'2 and 15.5st and it cramps my legs on long journeys.

There is just too much choice out there.

At your size if you're thinking of a fair bit of two up I'd definitely go for something bigger overall. Bird is a good shout.

I'm usually carrying the wife around on my sprint and for two up work it's really decent. Not sure your budget stretches that far though

Like this?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-TRIUMPH-SPRINT-ST-1050-SILVER-/131585352140?hash=item1ea31921cc

I am open to selling the Hornet for something that can do both.

There are quite a few ZZR1100's around in my budget that would allow me to keep both.

Think it's time to go and sit on a few and see what that are like.

So far I think I can narrow it down to a Blackbird, ZZX1100 and keep the Hornet.

Or, Sprint 1050. What are Speed Triples like for light 2up and Speed in comparison to the Hornet? Having a look online their power is pretty similar to the Street.

I'm drawn to nakeds as I like the way they looks, but maybe they're just not that practical.[/url]

Blackbird. No point changing from a hornet to a street triple.

A street triple is not a good bike to tour on. I loved mine but even with Ventura luggage it was not a two up tourer. It's a hooligan bike.

Get a sports tourer / tourer / adventure bike for two up touring. There is plenty of choice without compromising. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info chaps.

Looks like I'll keep the Hornet for some fun and go check out some Blackbirds and ZZR1100's in the forthcoming weeks.

You will get different engine characteristics, a bit more low down grunt and less top end rush. But ultimately they are both 100bhp near as damnit.
Street is quite comfortable, so that might be a consideration, but it's an expensive change just to get less knee ache.

I've got a topbox on mine and can just about fit a rollbag of tent + clothes in front of it. It works well and can easily do 3 hours without stopping except for 3mins for fuel.
But you have to pack it really well otherwise its too cramped.
And to get another person on there, forget it.
Definitely would not attempt two up touring!

The Speed / Street triples are not very good for pillions.

What about a honda vfr, often quoted as one of the finest sport tourers ever built. You can tour in comfort all day on one of those and it is more capable than your hornet for weekend blasts as well.....just a thought.

If her driving is anything to go by I would be attending a funeral. Would be nice though.

The ZZR1100's are heavy bikes (they don't feel it when you're riding them) and go through tyres and pads quickly if you're going out for a run on them yourself and using the available power

nice bikes tho

If you go for a ZZR 1100, go for a recent one. The early ones are getting rather long in the tooth now. Personally I would rather a blackbird or even a mk1 busa.

A ZRX1100 would be a better bet if having a pillion.

My old one was effortless for long distance work and fitted me well at 6'4.

You could buy a sports bike AND something comfy. Perhaps an early R6 and a Dullville? You could get one of each for £2.5k total.

Right chaps. I'm hopefully going to be looking at a blackbird tomorrow for £2k Ono. Is there anything I need to look out for? Meant to be pretty solid and reliable.
