Steep 125cc insurance

I've been thinking for a while about adding a 125 to the garage for short city trips, so I just got some speculative insurance quotes. All the quotes were for about the same as my FZ6! That's about £400! What the hell is that about?

OK, I know 125s get nicked quite often so that's fair, but seriously it's more than I used to pay when I rode one as a learner! Anyone know what's going on?

For the record, 250s were cheaper to insure. Maybe that's a better idea...?

Wait until your FZ6 policy runs out then try multi bike?

Don't expect there to be logic with insurance companies.

It costs me more to insure my 14bhp, 65mph Enfield Bullet than it does to insure my 100bhp, 155mph VFR750.

100cc bikes are often a fair chunk cheaper than a 125.

No Claim's Bonus? or lack-of on a 'new' policy.
But yeah, 125's make up half of the bikes on the roads, and the segment gets wacked with claims as so many are ridden by unqualified & inexperienced numpties, raising the base-risk the Ins-Co's use to work their voodoo calculations.
250's sit in a 'hole' in the insurance groupings; them that are qualified to ride'em rarely want them; so fewer about, and mostly ridden as 'cheap-wheels' they aren't expensive bikes, clocking up expensive claims to the Ins-co when they are nicked or crashed; so escape 'notice' in the voodoo stats.
Interestingly 750's often fall into a similar low-spot, and can be cheaper to insure than equivalent model 600's or 1000's.

125s are going to be used as urban commuters = more crashes, more opportunities to nick 'em.

However, for the same rider and the same usage, why did going from a 10bhp 125 to a 59bhp 500 see my premium drop?

Because insurers be tripping balls.
